The base pay as a teacher is one of the highest in the state of Maryland. There are some good people that work there, and if you're lucky, you have a good principal that will back you up. You have a chance to teach and make a difference, and teach content you are passionate about.
Well... where to begin? Well, no wonder Baltimore City Public Schools is one of the lowest performing districts in the country, and it's not the kids! From poor management (under qualified Teach For America, Baltimore City Teaching Residency or others that moved into district office positions) and constant turnover at the district office to the craziness that is the special education department (with the laws and new mandates every year) and finally, the constant turnover of Baltimore City Teaching Residency and Teach For America teachers that come in for 1 to 2 years and then promptly leave, or move up in the system to try and work at the district office (which is laughable because schools do not operate as a company). Teachers, though paid extremely well (compared to salaries of 30,000 to 40,000 dollars of other counties), are still not paid enough, and do not get the resources needed to teach an urban school district. There are nearly not enough social workers, aides, psychologists, administration and trainers to manage the increasing demands of common core and the expectation that teachers are coaches, cheerleaders, disciplinarians, parents, friends, and whatever else the top dogs at the national level, the state level and the district level decide the flavor of the month is. There is no consistency, which is a shame because that is what all children need. For me, it felt like everyone is covering their own butts to protect their own jobs, and not doing what they can to help teachers and help students.
