I worked at Bed Bath & Beyond full-time (More than 3 years)

BBB will provide you with a great platform for you to learn the business side of the retail world. You will make great connections dealing with vendors who will provide you with incredible insight. The company is profitable, and the workload is manageable (for the most part). There is a huge emphasis on customer service, and the business is successful because of that. Casual work environment & dress code (jeans!), clean & spacious office, cafeteria on campus, employee incentive program (monthly items offered to employees at cost). Decent health benefits & 401(k) options.

Sadly, having a job here only becomes about stability. Creativity goes to die here. Very limited growth opportunity. Dismal raises, about 1-3% pay increases every year based on business performance which is determined even before you submit your yearly review. Culture is very strange - if a promotion happens, it's a secret and is never celebrated. TONS of internal politics and promotion only comes if you are brown noser. Expect to work late hours, sometimes weekends, because home life is not encouraged. Limited vacation & holiday time off. Be prepared to come in when it snows outside! Employee discount is the same as the coupon (20%). No work travel unless you're in a higher position. NO perks what so ever. Yearly Holiday party is hot dogs & cold pasta, all which the employees are mandated to set up - very degrading. Buying & Planning employees are required to work 2 full 8 hour days in the retail stores between Thanksgiving & Christmas (on your own personal time during the weekends!), which is cruel and should be optional like it is for the other departments in the company. Parking lot is a nightmare, you won't get a spot unless you come in before 8:30. The style out room is a safety & health hazard. Dust and debris everywhere! Lots of people from the field move into the corporate office who then feel entitled and boss everyone around. The buying systems are extremely outdated and always have problems. Store employees (RM's, DM's, etc.) have more power than the corporate office employees and do not respect the buying/planning teams. We constantly walked on eggshells dealing with them. The company is extremely behind in the digital world and not up to date with current times. In an essence, Management does not know how to retain good people. The turnover in buying has been exceedingly high this past year - very unfortunate because there was some great talent. Pay is not competitive compared to other retailers. Many employees are visibly not happy here, but management turns a blind eye to it.

    Advice to Management

Have respect for hard working, dedicated employees. Give more opportunity to those who have been there and promote from within. TRAIN YOUR BUYERS who are new!! Many don't know the basic systems nor have any desire to learn. STOP THE OFFICE POLITICS and give every one a fair chance! Make the Holiday store help optional for everyone, time there is unproductive and we are burden to the store employees. Some buyers need to be reevaluated as they are inappropriate, pompous, ego statistical, and create an uncomfortable working environment (especially when they curse out their vendors & team members). Pay attention to the assistants, THEY DRIVE THE BUS OF THAT DEPARTMENT and need to be given more credit.
