    I worked at CEB full-time


    People mostly try to be very pleasant in the office. CEB puts a lot of effort in to staff development-though it often isn't effective, they are trying to make it better and gradually succeeding. There are some real gems among managers, who really know how to lead people and craft useful ideas. However, that is the exception rather than the norm... There is a decent amount of time off. Pay was delivered on schedule. There are far worse ways to pay the rent...


    I describe my experience, but there is great variety across practices and subunits therein. The place is drowning in corporate double speak (see Orwell's "Politics and the English Language"). The quality of analysis is held down by excessive reliance on buzzwords and imprecise language in CEB writing. Actually, writing is more like glorified PowerPointing. Fortunately the Executive Advisers can help explain poorly written reports to clients. In my experience, research is often more about pleasing an excessive number of chefs in the kitchen (stakeholders) rather than generating insight. 'Research analyst' is a misnomer- 'research promoter' is more fitting. The confidence with which ideas are presented matters far, far more than the substance of the ideas themselves. Having moved on to a more conventional consulting job, I feel that I learned little that would be valuable outside of CEB. In fact, I had to unlearn many habits that were good at CEB, but are bad practices in my new job. Most of this is related to vague language, and poor use of evidence, in preparing analytical findings.

    Advice to Management

    Create an environment that encourages critical analysis. The excessive drive towards consensus ensures that ideas are watered down. Customers may not know why analysis is lacking, but some do note its absence. Do a better job of explaining what CEB research is, and what it is not, during hiring.
