I worked at Capital City Public Charter School full-time (More than a year)
*If you are a hard worker and prove basic competence, admin trusts you to do your own thing and supports you in many of your endeavours. Your successes are widely, sincerely celebrated. *Coworkers at the middle school level are great. Mostly smart, dedicated folks. *The student population is extremely diverse, something I find very valuable as a teacher. Small class sizes. *We get as many supplies as we need; unlimited paper & copying (a trade-off for no textbooks), office supplies, student supplies, good tech supplies, etc. Pretty unheard of for teachers to not have to buy their own supplies.
*A major, MAJOR con: the workload is unsustainable. They know they have teachers working 12 hour days, but still will add to the to-do list. Making curriculum from scratch, lots of meetings, multiple courses to prep for, lots of administrative / scheduling tasks, a lot more fieldtrip, partnership, event planning & prep than your average teaching job. They phrase always seems to be "We know you're very busy doing great things, BUT..." It does usually seem "for the children," which is admirable - but one of the best things you can do for students is give teachers some balance in their life.
