Caterpillar has good benefits for their employees. They have many good people in positions of (lower) authority who genuinely seem to care about those whom they lead.
Career opportunities are rate a low score right now because of the economy and the huge number of layoffs announced (10,000) to occur by the end of 2018. As with all companies, it can depend on whom you get to work with as a manager/supervisor. Upper management can seem a bit callous when it comes to dealing with the lowly people who actually do the sweating to make the company work. They are also too unstable. With the world economy the way it is right now (late 2015) and their heavy ties to the global mining industry, no job is safe.
Advice to Management
While I understand that you have a responsibility to investors to show profits and that sometimes means letting some people go, you need to have and demonstrate more compassion when that process actually becomes necessary. The workers should not hear the first news of layoffs from the local news.
