I worked at Chatham University full-time (More than a year)

Excellent, compassionate faculty focused on student performance and outcomes. Faculty were almost uniformly collegial and and committed to student excellence. This was despite a horrendous managerial structure, the absence of tenure, and the resultant professional vulnerability this caused faculty who might not be renewed for political (rather than performance) reasons.

Turnover is an excellent indicator of terrible leadership and that holds true at Chatham. The president is an excellent crisis manager but this requires constant crises to shine. Faculty hide to avoid attention from the top and administrator turn over is significant. When someone with three years of experience at Chatham is considered to have "historical memory" and is "old-guard," you know you're in trouble.

    Advice to Management

Happily, Esther is about to retire. This is the best thing that could happen to Chatham. Hopefully, her successor will create a positive work environment, treat faculty and staff with respect, stick to a single, well-thought out strategic plan befitting an institution of Chatham's size, and accept compensation that does not rival universities that are magnitudes of order above Chatham.
