I worked at ConAgra Foods full-time (More than 5 years)

The people in middle management and below are troopers at ConAgra. They have worked very hard despite the lack of vision and strategy from upper management. Most people are strong team players and look to do a good job. ConAgra had a good work-life balance compared to other big companies.

The former CEO ,Gary Rodkin, set the company on a path to failure. He operated with a close-knit group of cronies and supported the good old boy network. Year after year employee surveys pointed out the lack of trust in Sr. Leadership and lack of career advancement opportunities at ConAgra, but nothing was done. Leadership did not listen to the people doing the work. They would keep all the decision at the top. Every 18 months there would be a re-org, McKinsey got rich from CAG's leadership's lack of strategic thinking. Gary's ego led the company to the disaster of a purchase with the Ral-Corp private label group. He put a President in charge of that division with no private label experience and no strong management track record which resulted in a dysfunctional organization that bled profit and alienated customers. The division is now being sold barely 2 years later. It's shameful to see how the Board let this poor leadership affect thousands of families. The C-Suite leave with millions of dollars while everyone else is left to pick up the pieces.

    Advice to Management

The New CEO is there to chop everything up and make more money for Wall st. and himself. He has no compassion to the how much change employees have already been through.
