I have been working at Cost Plus part-time (More than a year)

You will get paid and it has a super cooperative scheduling- you just put when you are not available and that is when you will be not scheduled.

There is a low probability for advancement in money or responsibility, those opportunities only come along when someone quits who is a badge holder or a section manager. This corporation only pays minimum wage, and you will work hard enough to earn more than that, even if your store is actually well-staffed. Because there are so many people who rightly move on to better things often Cost Plus stores are short staffed. The corporation's overhanging attitude is that every individual employee should feel responsible for every bit of work that needs to be done, keeping the store clean, and preventing theft. But they also believe that we are the greatest thieves in the store while we the employees are not allowed to act against people stealing in any way though (ex: people taking things into the bathroom). So we are constantly treated as thieves while as not being allowed to deal with thieves, because the people in the store who will never be costumers matter more than the employees. The corporation believes that if employees assert themselves in anyway it is rude (such as enforcing the no dogs in the store policy or calling up a manager to assist with an irate customer), so the clientele can be rather awful because they can say or do anything in store and they will not be stopped. The company will not hire part-time managers because they don't trust many people having access to the office, so outsiders will be hired before people in store who know how to do their jobs will be promoted. This is a union shop, so even though the Teamster will not represent you as a part-time employee you will have to pay them for the pleasure of working for Cost Plus. Your employee discount is not a boon for the corporation paying you a small wage, it is treated as a coupon you just happen to have, so you cannot use coupons. You also must always use your employee discount on transactions because getting more off would be stealing. The stores are cheaply run so everything is dirty and at some point non-functioning which is unpleasant for even those without allergies.

    Advice to Management

Ask the corporation to actually spend money on janitors and maintenance because even the customers hate it when the sinks leak. Also get a conscience, if there is a policy like customers being able to combine coupons cashiers should not be shamed for doing it. You need to pick a side and that side should be helping the employees and your store, it comes down to you to make a good store environment.
