I worked at Day & Zimmermann full-time (More than 3 years)
Once you're hired and processed in, you usually don't see management again. A guy can come off the street and make decent money and get plenty of overtime, usually. The work is not super tough unless you're out of shape.
They're never around until someone hurts themselves and then they take a stance that the employee was probably at fault. They're very adamant about not using any doctors except for "their"doctors. No pay increases. Also, no praise for doing a great job for 2 years. During my 5 years of working for them, they went through 3 changes of site management. Some of it was because of harassment issues, some of the guys were just poor managers of people. I don't know what criteria they use to screen those guys, but it doesn't seem like it was management-specific.
Advice to Management
More carrot, less stick.
