I worked at Hannon Hill full-time (More than 5 years)
The biggest pros are disciplined freedom and support. Hannon Hill gives an incredible amount of freedom to get your work done in your way and a great amount of support. As long as you are meeting your goals, milestones, and expectations, Hannon Hill treats you like a responsible adult. (That is not to say the opposite is true, so don't read into that.) They offer a great amount of support as well, both personally and professionally. Support to help you find ways to make your job fun and interesting, find the technical help you need within the company, and find opportunities to create something you're interested in. Practically unlimited PTO, multiple telework days per week, almost 100% company-paid health insurance, MARTA pass, free breakfast and lunch, use of company laptop, and so much more, Hannon Hill offers a great work life balance environment as well. I never felt like the company didn't have my interests in mind while also obviously keeping their own interests in mind. After all, it is a business to make money and that's what we're there to do.
One of the cons, to me personally, is that at times it can feel there is too much collaboration. Receiving help from other departments is great and having multiple departments work together is awesome, and this should be encouraged and celebrated. But that doesn't mean that other departments should perform your job responsibilities in the name of helping the client. Also, I wouldn't see Hannon Hill as a place to make a very large stamp on your resume. Certainly you will be getting a great amount of experience, but it should be noted that your growth potential is somewhat limited due to the size of the company. I was able to make some fabulous moves during my time here, but I see them as a great building block for the rest of my career. I wouldn't necessarily call this a con, but it is not a pro so I am listing it here as something to keep in mind. So be upfront about your professional expectations and take the opportunities for growth and responsibility when they are available. Ask for feedback and direct communication for what the company's options are and how you fit into them.
Advice to Management
I worked for Hannon Hill for almost 5 years. I was around for every employee that has posted reviews on this site, both positive and negative. It took a few years to really start to understand the pros and cons of working for the company. People always talked about this idea of "rockstars" and how you are more interested in them than other types of employees. And I think that's true. But it's not hard to seem like a "rockstar" when you're finding joy in what you're doing at work and wanting to create something new that makes you happy. It's not difficult to stand out against the other employees when the customers see you as someone they can really connect with. So all this talk of "rockstars" is a bit misleading because I think it really boiled down to who wanted to do the minimum amount of work required to maintain employment and receive a paycheck and who wanted to challenge themselves and build a better product and brand. As I was leaving there were some major updates to the products in the pipeline. I hope that you continue to involve the customers in the feedback loop early and often to create features and benefits that are great for them. It is incredibly important to solicit and catalog that feedback because the clients were always incredibly thankful for our efforts to reach them on a human level and remind them that they matter. Please continue to do this. I very much enjoyed my time working at Hannon Hill and I'm incredibly thankful for all of the support I was given and the knowledge I gained. I think you should continue to provide your employees the same work environment that I experienced and remember that you cannot please every single person every single time. There are always 1-star reviews, but the bulk of the feedback you get gives a better picture of how things are going and progressing.
