I worked at Harbour School full-time (Less than a year)
Absolutely wonderful students and families. Students receive extracurricular opportunities they would not be able to participate in at other schools. Parents seemed very satisfied, which helps to make our jobs easier. Decent retirement plan. They pay a large chunk of your healthcare premium your first year, and then they increase it each year until they pay it in full on your 10th year of service. Lengthy holiday breaks. They ask you for a wish list with suggestions so they (administration) can get you a gift on your birthday. I thought that was thoughtful of them to do that.
Pay seems significantly lower for experienced staff. However, for entry level the pay is on target. Watch your back. If for some reason you are disliked or unfairly judged by the cliquish queen bees in the building, they will spread rumors about you, and belittle you as a group on a daily basis. They won't say anything directly, but they are masters at body language, eye contact/ aversion and tone of voice. You'll definitely get the message and know exactly what they mean. They are systematic and calculating too...they had 20 people come up to me to say the exact same demeaning, sarcastic stuff. Very sick, nasty and twisted yet...but they seem very proud of their group bullying tactics. Unfortunately, when you have 20 people on you, it's hard to fight back. Especially when you are pretty certain your mentor and some administrators are joining in on attacking you. If you have the misfortune of ending up in a situation like mine, get out of there. It's not a fair fight and it is SOOOOOOOO not worth sacrificing your health, dignity and happiness.
Advice to Management
I think the the pay and benefits are great. Child- first philosophy is what makes you a very special and highly regarded private school. Your student numbers will only continue to get higher each year as happy parents rave about you to other parents. Keep up the good work on that front. You might be losing great employees because you have a group of cruel, insecure, active and aggressive bullies who eventually force them out. If you have had turnover issues, I would look into this as a possible cause.
