I have been working at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers full-time (More than 10 years)
Excellent pay and benefits. Great people to work with. This is a career that will reward you with a job well done. A job begins out of the dirt and when it is done you can walk away, the lights come on and everything works, whatever it is that was built. You can look back and say "I was a part of that project". This career gives you a great sense of community too. You will always feel as though you belong to a family. Everyone looks out for each other. In times of need they stick together and help each other out and help people in the community out whenever there is a need. Union people are very giving and volunteering is something they do a lot of for each other and the community.
IF YOU DO NOT LIKE TO WORK HARD, THEN THIS JOB IS NOT FOR YOU! Being an electrician is not a "cushy" job. You need to be smart, have COMMON SENSE, and be able to get along with others. You need to be able to work alone as well as being able to work with others. Each job is different and the demands are ever changing. So if you do not like change, then this job is not for you. You need to be safety conscious, take direction well from your superiors regardless of whether you like them or not, because your life could depend on it. Electricity does not need to be feared but very well respected. If you do not wish to continue educating yourself past the initial 5 year apprenticeship, then this job is not for you!
