I have been working at Investment Technology Group full-time
The job where everyone checks out early. A lot of leisure time during work hours as well. Everyone seems to take their time working on anything no matter how simple or complex. Ok for the self starter.
No work. No training. Everyone keeps knowledge to themselves for job security. They are ok with other people failing so they can claim expertise. Support is all about firefighting to save jobs. When something fails, the technologists congratulate themselves and ask for more money because they did a great job recovering instead of writing better code or maintaining our systems. Technology (ironically as part of company name) is falling apart. All smart and motivated developers and technologists are gone or demotivated to not maintain the system. Weekly/Daily failures in different software components across the company. Timelines for fixes are "stretched" out by development to months/year. Everyone demotivated. No bonuses. Base pay is below bottom of industry average and bonuses are no where close. Even top people can only hope for a good bonus. if you got double digit bonus, that means everyone else on your team got low single digit or zero, your manager has to choose from that small pot. Rankings and bonuses arbitrary despite the internal evaluation system. Senior managers/ Executive management are open to clients due to recent events but you don't see any of them walking around internally anymore unless another technology failure occurs (almost weekly now). They try to sell having no work to do as work-life balance, but having less clients/work is not work-life balance. Rather have more benefits to balance it out rather than everyone worry about having a job.
Advice to Management
Technology is abhorrently awful. Technology managers do not know technology. From front-ends to market data, internal routing systems, databases, algorithms, clearing systems, ...basically everything. Maybe time for some outside technologists to take over the software systems. We've tried to have internal managers fix our systems for last 10 years but all those initiatives and projects have not worked. Go to banking payscale, people are wiling to work hard for a good reward. People come and then they leave within a year or two. It ruins the morale of current employees and it destroys the recruitment of future employees if they keep on seeing horrible pay. No one will want to work at ITG if the pay is kept this low. If people want work-life balance with this low pay, they would work at a startup. At least there they are more relaxed, have a vision, and possibility of a payout in a few years for the same low pay at ITG.
