I worked at J. Walter Thompson Worldwide full-time (More than 3 years)

    J. Walter Thompson is a big name, so I guess it looks decent on a Resume. The office is relatively nice with a good view.

The agency is toxic. Upper management runs things with only their best interests in mind. Account Management runs things for the most part by pushing fear and keeping client relationships tight. Juniors generally hate their managers who treat them like kids. They have a very high impression of themselves and rarely come to meeting they should be a part of. Creative Management does not set up the place to succeed. They are more focused on personal advancement vs. agency advancement. The team has done everything possible to bring in as many yes-men/women they can and push out all independent thinkers. They put a premium on design with little knowledge or ability to push concepts. This is evident in the work being produced. Promotions and higher ranking positions have been given to friends who help tow personal agendas. There are many accounts of unprofessional behavior from public intoxication outbursts to promoting inappropriate employee politics. The most toxic department in the agency. Strategy is fairly useless bringing very little insights and spending tons of the client's money to justify their existence. The social team are wildlings, fighting to have any kind of impact on what the agency is doing. While they bring insights, their mentality to fight for importance kills any collaborative ability to work with creative. HR is lost and in over their heads. They'll talk in circles to hide their lack of experience. Overall the whole agency isn't being managed. Protocols change every couple months, but every move has been a big failure...i.e. strategy approving and killing creative ideas. Essentially no one is at the steering wheel and the business sways with departmental power struggles. Because of all this, I witnessed the agency culture erode making it the most toxic environment I've ever worked in and causing the agency to earn a very poor reputation.

    Advice to Management

For the management of the management, just know what's going on. This is not a creative agency. It's being pushed to design studio who will work clients like shady sales people. A lie may get yourself 6 months more of billings, but put another notch in the bad reputation the agency is building up.
