For a company that hires for intellectual horsepower, it could benefit tremendously on many fronts by moving at least to the mid-point on empowerment, autonomy and decision-making authority below the VP levels.
Advice to Management
To grow the company at the rate it is looking to achieve successfully. The Leadership Team needs to start empowering the Sr. Managers, Directors and VP populations with "true" decision-making authority. It will also be critical to shift away from talking about accountability and using it as a stick to hold decisions hostage and to move toward true personal accountability. Where, if individuals, especially at the Executive levels do not agree with a decision, and they intentionally do not respond within the framework or timeframe requested, they forfeit the right to hold the decision back from proceeding. Resolving this cultural, behavior and process will be critical for success as the company continues to increase in size and product portfolios.
