I worked at Leslie's Swimming Pool Supplies full-time (More than 10 years)
Seasonal down time. Decent pay (for store managers only). Made friends with a lot of coworkers and upper management. Made friends with customers. Payed yearly one week manager's meetings that were pretty fun. Bonuses, however this might go in the cons category since it was only good when sales permitted otherwise it would be awful.
Too much paperwork and silly reports. Had to hire and train employees very quickly before season. Stressful in season work overload. District managers were constantly giving ridiculous deadlines on paperwork and sales goals. Computers constantly crashing due to chlorine fumes in stores. Poor and slow software and POS hardware. Customer complaints constantly. Having to juggle problems that were out of your personal control. Sales bonuses were based on sales which generally meant if it was a rainy season... no bonus which could make up to 25% of your base salary.
Advice to Management
Try not to make the managers do too much paperwork! The one philosophy they try to imply is to treat customers well and give them attention, then they lay reports on managers that does the exact opposite of that. Also should not nitpick the managers on schedules and allow them to have more control of that. GET NEW COMPUTER EQUIPMENT!!!!!!!!!! Stop coming up with 20 steps to do something when it should only take 5 (water testing).
