I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 3 years)
-nice offices -management supports training -good salary -solid benefits
-lots of (pointless) middle management layers -while preaching innovation and pushing the envelope, management actually extremely conservative -lots of conflict between people with "integrated" Marathon way of working and newer "independent" mindsets -since downtown started, there's been no productive communication to employees as to strategy or direction...just a lot of initiatives and buzz words with no substance -relative ranking performance review system pits employees against each other. I understand the logic in trying to evaluate everyone on the same playing field, but rather than force relative ranking, have your managers get on the same page to do a more traditional performance review...there's certainly no shortage of them with little to nothing else to do.
Advice to Management
Communicate clear direction to employees so people can get to work and not be afraid they're going to be laid off after cutting most severance packages in half. Embrace innovation and get rid of the folks that are solely concerned with playing corporate politics. If you really want to be the 'premier independent E&P', embrace an aggressive stance and reward both your office and field personnel for achieving real performance goals, not just the nonsense that gets twisted to make us look like #1 in internal meetings.
