I worked at National League of Cities full-time (More than 3 years)
NLC is great if you are fresh out of college and need to be your skill and plan to move on asap. If you are junior staff, you can pretty much take on any projects you like and run with them adding to your resume. Depending on your department, you can establish your own schedule (come in a bit later/ leave a bit early). If you are looking to connect with elected officials, the two conferences are a great place to network.
Management is horrible. They openly disparage fellow colleagues. The amount of staff turnaround is tremendous. Staff who leave mostly do so because they are sick of the mismanagement, lack of transparency. Due to constant staff turnaround, junior staff are usually left to take on more work but with no promotion, increase in salary or bonus. Promotions rarely happen and annual salary is the lowest i have seen in DC for this sector. HR is a joke and offers no support. The technology used on a daily basis is super basic and constantly going offline.
Advice to Management
All senior staff needs to go. More transparency. And HR is horrible and does not follow standard protocol.
