I worked at The Department for Education (UK) full-time (More than 3 years)
As a Civil Service Department you get that sense of job security, the pension scheme is second to none and the terms of employment are very good in respect of development and working life. The buildings are all good quality and generally colleagues are supportive.
Department was in chaos, restructuring and slimming down have generated a fear culture and overall you get the feeling you need to watch your back a lot. Too much emphasis on delivering short term solutions rather than learning from long running experience. Work is too fast paced due to waterfall effect of communications, things that should take a few days to verify and clear and asked of operational delivery in a day due to extensive management hierarchy involved in communicating needs and work.
Advice to Management
Remember you are not there just to service the Ministers whims, you have a duty of care and a responsibility to your employees which, from my personal experience, you failed to deliver.
