If you don't sell you are out. About 1/3 of your pay is commission, so the incentive is there. That said, managers will be on you after every customer transaction. They want to hear that you followed a strict talk-line and you have to continually prove yourself, every customer. All in-store customer service, at least in the SW, were moved into sales position. Quotas continually went up, more metrics were added, and back of house work (inventory, opening and closing the store) went up. Over the last year the job became more work and less pay. Also, don't think that everyone is in the store to purchase something. A lot of the job still is customer service oriented. Management preaches about being a team. Yet they continually reward sales reps that would be considered sharks. This makes the environment and culture very false, the only reason anybody works there is for money. Most of the reps are honest and fair, but the few that were not caused a lot of stress for everyone.
Advice to Management
Give the talented sales people you hire a little more room to breath. They will respect, and not resent, you for it and perform better. If you are going to preach about team spirit, cut off the few reps that walk all over the other reps. Offer a better culture and you will keep talent working for you.
