I worked at athenahealth (More than a year)

The team I was on had some really smart people, and some really really above average devs. Note, this was my team - your milage may vary. Of the people in my group, about 3/4 seemed to know everything there is to know about linux & perl. Pay was pretty good for my first job out of school. Extremily good work/life balance on some teams. Lots of free food. Good subsidies in cafeteria. Interview process is pretty OK.

Perl is terrible. The codebase is pretty terrible. We wrote our own web framework for no reason. We wrote our own test framework for no reason. Theres a loooot of arrogance in this company - people seem to think that just because the product is doing well, we're all 10x awesome mega engineers - we're not. Athena's devs are solid, but we are not good enough and do not have the resources to justify our attitude. Oh, we also have our own in-house version of browserify. Written in Perl. Yay. Technical leadership is almost entierly an old-boys club of lower quality devs who were with the company from an earlier period. Unfortunatly, these people think they're good devs and insist on keeping their fingers in the development community - I suspect this is why all of our terrible in-house tools stick around. Technical leadership is composed mostly of people from MIT and Ivy league schools - this is a bad thing. Most good engineers come from non prestigious colleges since engineering is a talent-driven field, but management doesn't seem to agree. Large parts of the company don't really do anything to contribute to business value. I kind of felt like an office ornament for my entire time there. Software companies have weird people - Athena's are weirder than most, though mostly fine. We hire a lot from the bottom half of the world's greatest universities. Our CEO is a mega-rich Bush who's position in life is due 100% to the fact that he's a Bush, and to luck. I can't respect him. The company doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Our product is really boring. Stick around until you're dieing of boredom, then leave.

    Advice to Management

Stop being you, and be good.
