I have been working at eResearchTechnology full-time

    - There's still considerable talent left at the individual contributor and low/mid management levels - The work is rewarding and actually helps people live better lives - The services organization is the strength of the business and they are in touch with the customer's needs - New eCOA Engineering VP is a refreshing change to the old leader

    - Talented managers and employees are being driven off in favor of cronies and managers that manage up. - Some senior management acts like they are still at GE and fails to realize we are the small guy servicing the giant customer instead of the other way around. Someday we may be that large, but that day hasn't come yet. - The organizational structure is disjointed. Responsibilities are not well defined. - Product management doesn't know what they are building. Sales doesn't know what they are allowed to sell. Senior management doesn't know the differences between their eCOA offerings. - CAPA process favors patches over long term fixes. It is a very heavy weight process that discourages innovation. - It has become acceptable for product engineering management to communicate release dates to senior management with no accountability for hitting those dates. Then, make up excuses for their failure, get more resources and continue to mismanage those resources. This isn't a once and a while thing, but a reoccurring pattern.

    Advice to Management

    1) Identify your talent and figure out how to retain them before it is too late. 2) Take the time to really understand your offerings at a deeper level. 3) Have individual contributors provide feedback anonymously about specific managers and directors. Make sure the feedback is cross-functional. The view from the bottom may be very different from the view from the top. 4) Get the organization cleaned up and provide clear charters. 5) Stop promoting poor performing managers and directors. Instead start holding them accountable.
