A research fellow manages an academic project and associated lab or team. Their role includes developing research projects, securing funding, managing research assistants and reporting to senior mentors in their department. A doctoral degree and management experience is generally required. Since grants are typically most plentiful in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations, demand for research fellows with expertise in subjects such as biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering and statistics is expected to remain the strongest.
