I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 5 years)
Very good company to work for. Excellent pay for.the work you do. The benefits are right up there with other fortune 500 companies. At the top of safety on the job.
There is quite a bit of time wasted on inspection of the cars, due to transportation getting them set in place on time.
Advice to Management
I Believe the mechanical supervisor 's should have to go thru the same schooling as a Carman before they can tell u how to do your job.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Norfolk Southern (Harrisburg, PA) in August 2013.
Very detailed interview process, inform you over the phone about there interest. Fly you down Put you up in a nice hotel, spending voucher for the interview processes. If you pass the first phase, there are two more phases, the third phase is when your hired upon passing. Your placed in a six month training program and then assigned to a location after you pass eleven FDA mandated test and then your marked up. Once at the terminal after three months your have to be rules qualified to become classed as a Assistance Trainmaster (B3). You have a B4 and the B5 the Terminal Superintendent who's the Terminal Boss. You can get burned anytime if you upset them, on your way out.
A set starting salary and as your was marked up, pay increase was increased.
