I have been working at Pie Insurance full-time (More than a year)
You know the phrase, Be The Change? If you want to Be The Change, work at Pie.
Pie offers an incredibly unique opportunity for our team to disrupt a dinosaur of an industry while creating a company that we want to work for. It takes an incredible amount of courage, commitment and hard work to stand up an insurance company in less than a year. It's all about the team.
Big picture, being part of something so revolutionary is an incredible career experience. It gives meaning to your work, even the most mundane tasks, which are inevitable and frequent in a small startup environment.
We are a meritocracy. It doesn't matter what you did at your last job or whether you have 20 years of experience doing X. The best idea can come from the person with the least experience. It has to be the best idea, though, and it has to do right by our customers and our team members.
Given how small we are, the benefits are quite good. I gave 5 stars given the size and age of our company. Pie pays for 100% of the insurance premiums for its team members. That's right - 100% Pie paid. We also offer a take-what-you-need time off policy. And, most importantly, every team member gets a piece of Pie, literally, in the form of stock options.
Adult environment. I work 8-10 hours most days. We aren't on the clock - people get the work done, and that's what matters. Team members arrive between 8:30 and 10 AM. It's not the kind of place where you get written up for coming in late. What matters is that you handle your business in a mature, thoughtful way while supporting the team.
Really cool DC office in a co-working space. Looks like a West Elm catalog in here! Awesome amenities - relaxation room is a nice place to chill out. Beer on tap. Walking distance to great restaurants and multiple Metro lines. All lines are within walking distance, actually.
The Denver office is also in a very modern, brand-new space at Industry RiNo. Sit/stand desks, gorgeous outdoor lounge. One stop from Union Station and (for now) free parking.
Don't come here for glamour or power. Expect to get your hands dirty and work hard.
It's a fast pace. You have to fail fast, pick yourself up, dust it off and keep going. Sometimes, the pace and the failure can feel awfully uncomfortable. To us, that's part of the path to success. But, it's uncomfortable, especially if you've worked in a larger, more structured company.
High degree of ambiguity. We're a young company (founded in 2017), we're laser focused on building the business. If you thrive in detailed project plans and tons of documented processes, well, we just aren't there yet. It's important for people to select an environment that works for them, so we tend to look for people who don't need a lot of structure to thrive.
Risk. There's a degree of risk in every startup. We had a great seed round raise, and the market response to our product has been fantastic. Our co-founders are no spring chickens; they're experienced leaders with industry experience. But, this environment is not for the risk-averse.
Advice to Management
Use the Series A capital to round out the benefit offerings and make Pie an even more attractive place to work.
Invest in your leaders. Help them become better managers.
Let's never lose sight of our customer - who they are and what they want. A majority of small business owners are women in their late 30s. In a few years, the majority of SMBs will be owned by millenials. Our team must be able to understand and build for the customer.
