    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Suncor (Calgary, AB (Canada)) in April 2021.

    Interview

Suncor might be a great company to work for, however they really need to consider doing away with the HireVue process as a recruitment tool.

The platform is touted as a way for candidates to have a level playing field however the technology does not provide for any interaction or clarification on the questions asked.

While I can appreciate that Suncor has a high volume of postings and applicants, using HireVue is a lazy way to filter potential candidates. I see no value for using this technology for higher level or more complex roles. It’s bad enough that good candidates are being filtered out through an ATS system if they don’t meet one of the criteria.

An interview should provide an opportunity for a candidate to also ask their own questions, especially since they have invested the time in the application process and to learn about the company.

Including a question on HireVue for an individual to provide their salary expectations when a candidate has not even had the opportunity to ask more about the position, the work environment, or the culture is short sighted on the company’s part.
Also be warned: the practice sessions may state that there are 2 attempts available to record each question. When I did my recording, I was only allowed one attempt. I practiced and strived to be successful in one shot, but I stumbled on the first question with no chance at a redo. I will likely not apply to any future posting for any company that uses the HireVue process.

    Interview Questions

    • Each question had about 3-4 parts to it. These are a few:
Why are you making this change?
Describe how your skills and experience match the requirements of this role?
State your compensation expectations including salary, bonus, vacation   Answer Question
