I have been working at US Fish and Wildlife Service full-time (More than 5 years)
Working in conservation is so incredibly rewarding in and of itself. In particular, I love that I am able to leverage my strengths in administration and attention to detail in a way that contributes meaningfully to conservation. My program has supportive first-tier leadership that has consistently rewarded good, competent performance.
The current administration is not a friend to my program. For years they've been developing roadblocks and hurdles and endless exercises in paperwork. Funding that has been appropriated by Congress for very specific purposes is being held up with literally no actual written justification, so it's gotten very disheartening.
Advice to Management
Talk to your staff! Don't keep updates to yourself for fear that it'll upset the team. Rumors quickly become horrible, monstrous things that can be easily dismissed if you will simply share with us what is going on, however unpleasant the reality is. Do not leave us in the dark, or you will demoralize us.
