A.T. Kearney – Why Work For Us?

Culture and Values

At A.T. Kearney we celebrate the unexpected—from dreams of playing in Carnegie Hall, to entering the Berlin Olympic Stadium or broadcasting live from CNBC. The rich, diverse backgrounds of our consultants have a dramatic impact on what our teams accomplish for our clients every day—a dynamic that has defined our culture for more than 90 years.

Wondering what it's like to be a consultant at A.T. Kearney? Watch this short clip of a day in the life of Rana, one of our consultants out of the New York office.

Diversity and Inclusion

A.T. Kearney has always valued diversity and inclusion. In the words of Tom Kearney, "The true strength of this firm, as in any organization, lies in the fact that we are all different. . . . The strength inherent in this firm rests upon these collective and diverse interests. They are all we have."

Every day, we strive to add value for our clients. To do this most effectively, it is important that our people can be themselves and feel comfortable without encountering prejudice or discrimination and that they have equal opportunities to contribute, develop, and succeed irrespective of race, sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression. We also know that our clients derive greater benefit from teams with a wide range of experts with unique experiences, backgrounds, and skill sets.

Our commitment to diversity has long been recognized. In 2018, Diversity MBA Magazine, a national leadership publication targeting managers, executives, professionals, students and the business community, published A.T Kearney in it's eleventh annual list of 50 Out Front: Best Places to Work for Women & Diverse Managers Ranking – Best in Class Companies. We were one of five firms—and one of the only high value management consultancies—to receive the magazine’s Excellence in Diversity Achievement Award. For seven consecutive years, we have scored a perfect 100 in the challenging Corporate Equality Index (CEI), which rates 800 businesses based on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender workplace policies and benefits. The index has proven to be a significant measure of a company’s commitment to developing and supporting a diverse workforce.

We continually strive to improve our diversity and inclusion policies, structures, and support networks to ensure that we fully meet the needs of our people and our clients—and help set the standard for our industry. We actively promote a diverse and inclusive culture through a variety of channels, including our diversity networks and our equal employment opportunity policy.

Global Diversity Networks

A.T. Kearney has a number of global and local diversity networks that reach out in the following ways:

  • Assist in outreach efforts to make candidates aware of the company’s policies
  • Provide a support network for members
  • Help members take advantage of both formal and informal mentoring opportunities

  • Work with leaders and all consultants to raise awareness of diversity within A.T. Kearney
  • Strengthen diversity by bringing people from more diverse backgrounds to the firm

Our networks include the following:

Women’s Network
The Women’s Network is one of the longest standing in the firm. We are committed to recruiting, and advancing and supporting women at A.T. Kearney. Our objectives are to address the following areas:

  • Improve our ability to attract and recruit top women candidates at all levels. During the recruiting process, for example, women candidates have access to junior consultants and leaders providing the best information and advice to form a solid decision.
  • Enhance our ability to retain and advance top women candidates:
    • Strengthening networks in the local offices and our global firm
    • Supporting career development, progression, and performance success
    • Providing better work-life balance for our people at different stages in their personal life and careers
  • Provide forums and platforms for a broad business women’s exchange, focusing on general management topics as well as industry-specific topics
  • Demonstrate A.T. Kearney’s commitment as a women-friendly place to develop a career

We emphasize networking and mentoring opportunities through formal and informal channels. Local women’s networks facilitate strong relationships and exchange of experiences. Mentoring programs also help connect colleagues with different levels of experience across the extended women’s network and help drive a culture that focuses on retention and success.

We have become particularly active in promoting International Women’s Day, held on March 8th. Many of our offices around the world hold events to mark the day featuring various speakers, with opportunities to network, celebrate, and reflect on the great diversity of the women of A.T. Kearney—and the powerful impact we have on our firm’s culture as we deliver on the needs of clients, colleagues, and families.

We place a high value on collaboration and work together to provide every colleague with full and ready access to the best of our firm. We enjoy working together to formulate and implement elegantly simple and durable solutions for our clients. We pride ourselves on being authentic, providing candid, honest, and creative approaches that work. And we are forward-thinking, practically applying market foresight to produce immediate results and lasting, transformational advantage for our clients.

Q: How does A.T. Kearney build its image in the market?

A: A.T. Kearney has a number of initiatives to build our brand and image in the marketplace and expand our client relationships. These include publications such as Executive Agenda—our business journal, books and business issue papers, and research studies, such as the Global Retail Development IndexTM, FDI Confidence Index® and Global Cities Index, as well as events that we sponsor or facilitate, such as roundtables, industry briefings and speeches at many high-level conferences. We are also active on social media sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

Q: What is the interview process?

A: The interview process can vary depending on the region. However, as a general rule, there are two rounds of interviews. First round interviews consist of two sets of interviews. We will ask you to complete a short case study that allows us to assess your communication and problem-solving skills. Next we assess your overall fit, based on your experience, core competencies, and potential client impact. Final rounds typically consist of two case/fit interviews and one structured case presentation (for associates.) For the case presentation, you will be given a case and time to prepare on your own. You will then present the case as one of your interviews. All candidates participate in several one-on-one discussions with A.T. Kearney consultants at all levels. For more specific information, please visit the “Apply” section for your region of interest.

Q: If A.T. Kearney does not recruit on campus at my school, what are my options?

A: We focus our campus recruiting efforts on a select list of core schools. Students at other schools can submit an application via the “Apply” section of our website.

Q: Do I need to have experience in a certain industry to be considered for an interview?

A: A.T. Kearney looks for well-rounded candidates. We recruit for strong problem solving, analytical, and communication skills. We also look for leadership experience and a demonstrated history of success.

Q: What backgrounds do you typically recruit from for the Business Analyst position?

A: A.T. Kearney recruits business analysts from all undergraduate backgrounds. All majors and concentrations are considered when reviewing resumes. A student who possesses a non-business graduate degree and two years of solid work experience may be considered for the senior business analyst role.

Q: What are some of the typical schools where Business Analysts enroll to earn their MBA?

A: Business analysts typically enroll in top-tier business schools if they return to earn an MBA. Some schools most often attended include Anderson, Chicago Booth, Columbia, Darden, Harvard Business School, INSEAD, Ivey, Kellogg, London Business School, Sloan, Stanford, Stern, Ross, and Wharton.

Q: Do you hire people with a non-business Master's or Ph.D.? Are the recruiting process and the final offer different?

A: A.T. Kearney hires Masters and PhD graduates from campus and from industry. Masters students follow the same campus hiring process as undergraduates. Students graduating with PhDs may be hired as senior BAs or associates, depending on their work experience, and they will follow the campus recruiting process of business analysts/senior business analysts or associates as appropriate. Industry hires (typically managers and above) follow a separate recruiting process.

Q: At what level would a candidate with a Masters degree in Engineering or Economics, for example, and no work experience enter the firm?

A: Masters students with no work experience join the firm as business analysts.

Q:Are full-time opportunities available for undergraduates across the globe?

A: Some of our offices may look for full-time associates from business schools from outside their regions. However, most of our offices meet their needs through local efforts for undergraduate candidates.

Q: What are the qualifications needed for international placement?

A: Local language fluency is required to work in any of our offices across the globe. Additionally, some offices prefer fluency in two or three languages. Work experience in the region and a good understanding of the local culture and business practices are very important. Some offices may also have other specific requirements.

Q: How do I apply for international placement, and what is the interview and offer process?

A: For full time positions, interviews are by invitation only. Unsolicited resumes will be sent to the office of interest for consideration. For summer recruiting, there is a separate application process for students at our core schools. Offers are extended by the international office.

Q: Can I apply to A.T. Kearney offices in more than one location? How is this process managed?

A: Candidates can apply to more than one office. However, they can only interview with one region, such as North America or Asia Pacific. If multiple offices are interested in a candidate, we will ask the candidate to make a decision before the interview lists are finalized. Our recruiters and Human Resources staff remain coordinated throughout the process and can assist candidates in navigating through the process.

Q: How do I submit my resume?

A:Recruiting is managed on a country basis. To apply, visit the “Apply” section and select the region and country to which you would like to apply.

Q:Will my offer be tied to a specific office?

A:We extend offers tied to a specific A.T. Kearney office. Candidates are able to rank office choice and we try to accommodate these preferences as much as possible.

I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at A.T. Kearney (Chicago, IL).

I applied at a career fair. The process was fairly quick. The first round interview focused on three main areas 1) Prior Experience in Analytics 2) Behavioral fit and 3) Case. The case was a short back of the envelope calculation. This round lasted 45 mins. I heard back from the company in a couple of days and was asked to come to Chicago for a one day selection process. This consisted of an analytics assessment(on excel), three rounds of interviews and a presentation round.

    • Typical Behavioral Questions: Strengths, failures, why consulting, why ATK, why this position
A few very short cases. Calculate number of beverages/fast food sold at an event etc. Some questions going in detail about previous work experience.
