I have been working at AGV Sport Group full-time (More than a year)
This is not at all your typical internship.
I am a Chinese international student from Shenzhen China, and graduated with a Criminology degree at the University of Maryland College Park. I’ve been working as an intern manager since September 2016 both at AGV Sports Group and its non-profit advocacy project: “Victims of Immigration Fraud” (VOIF).
Though I initially interned in an advocacy program that deals with international marriage fraud, I quickly got involved in some day-to-day business operation, too. I learned to wear multiple hats, and that’s a prerequisite to work in a real business.
The VOIF internship gave me a great opportunity to talk to real victims of immigration fraud, and advocate for the fixing of loopholes within the US immigration system. It also helps improve my communication and interpersonal skills, while at the same time challenges me to think critically, because many “victims” turned out to be no victims at all, and they are simply having relationship issues.
The business side is much more nuanced, but it taught me the normal business protocols, interacting with and managing co-workers (interns), email etiquette, customer service, mailing and shipping, etc.: all essential practices in a business environment.
The most important lesson I learned, is to be resourceful, responsible, and take initiatives on my own. I’m no where near the ideal level, but this is a very good starting point for me, who has very little qualification aside a college degree, which is becoming less and less meaningful in today’s job market.
Office is located in the southern Frederick County. Could be a long commute for people coming from Virginia, Prince George or Baltimore.
If you do not commit to at least a 3 months program, you might miss out on some interesting activities. For example, all the interesting things that I have experience such as lobbying activities and meeting people from other organizations and businesses took place after my first 3 months.
Advice to Management
Needs better screening and interview process, so that during the vetting the management can identify applicants who are not qualified. The goal is to recruits responsible and motivated students who can work together in good cohesion and relationship.
I applied online. I interviewed at AGV Sport Group (Frederick, MD) in September 2016.
I applied on internships.com and got a reply in 24 hours to speak to the president. Upon hearing I'm from the area the president schedule an interview the next day.
I came to the office on the scheduled time, and the interview itself took about 30 minutes.
It's more like a conversation, without any rigid formality. We talked about things that seems total related and the president asked me to come in the next week. And so began the second-phase evaluation --- the internship itself.
