1. Zachary, how and when did you first get in contact with ALPLA?
In the summer of 2010 I returned home from completing my second year at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) looking for a summer co-op (cooperative education) position in Mechanical Engineering. I called several local engineering and manufacturing companies and received a call back from the Operations Manager at ALPLA Cortland.

2. Why did you choose ALPLA?
ALPLA Cortland provided me a good balance of calculation/design work as well as hands-on production floor work for my co-op experiences. For full time, my familiarity with the company from the plant level helped influence my decision to accept the position with the regional service center.

3. When did you became a full time employee for ALPLA?
My two summers at ALPLA Cortland were 2010 and 2012. Full time at the Service Center in McDonough I began in June 2013.

4. What is your current position at ALPLA?
Project Engineer with the Program & Project Management department.

5. In your opinion, ALPLA focuses on apprentices because…?
It is a good way to bring young talent into the company and establish the mindset and work ethic consistent with what ALPLA is looking for in its employees.

Because ALPLA accompanies us around the world and around the clock in the form of an unlimited variety of plastic packaging items for the most diverse contents - from shower gel to engine oil, detergent to lemonade.

Overview of the ALPLA product range:

  • Packaging systems: In addition to individual components, ALPLA also offers packaging systems, i.e. bottles complete with cap. The result: maximum production efficiency and the highest functional safety.
  • Bottles: HDPE; LDPE; PP; 6-layer Coex; PET; PET-G
  • Caps & injection moulding parts: Custom-made shapes (hinged lids, measuring caps, two-part caps, round lids, caps for safety packaging, sticks); Standard caps (PCO 28 in 1810- und 1881-Ausführung, 37 mm 2-starters, 38 mm 3-starters, sports caps, Push-Pull caps, child safety caps)
  • Preforms: For water, soft drinks, milk or oil; Multilayer Preforms; Industry-specific designs

    I have been working at ALPLA full-time (More than 3 years)


    Good pay, good benefits. Health insurance is ok they only offer HDHP but they match 401k up to 6%. Opportunities to advance and move up in the company providing you are able to learn the required skills. Only work 15 days a month 6 months out of year.


    Employees need to be held accountable for mistakes made and repeated mistakes should be disciplined. Lack of communication sometimes causes rough transitions between products. Setup sheets for the down stream machines need to be as close to exact as possible not "ball park" like they are currently. Shortage of competent maintenance technicians. Some people are hire on the fact that they just showed up every day for an allotted amount of time, not whether they possess or are capable of even learning the necessary skills to operate the machines well enough to efficiently run a quality product.

    Advice to Management

    Hopeful hires/ temporary employees should be required to show a basic knowledge and understanding of the down stream machines before being hired, as well as be required to have worked for an allotted amount of days/hours to qualify for employment. Employees should be held accountable for bad product or quality issues if it becomes a regular problem, while it's true not every quality issue can be caught every time I can be improved if repeat issue are disciplined. Carelessness of quality wastes a lot of man hours and money. Quality checks should be required every 30 minutes instead of every 60 minutes by increasing the amount of quality checks each shift defects and quality issues can be caught sooner and would require less time to correct. Employees need to be held accountable for the quality of the product they run as well as how they handle problems and operations of their designated areas. Setup sheets need to be as close to perfect as possible.

    I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ALPLA (McDonough, GA) in July 2019.


    I applied through the ALPLA careers website. I was called from HR first to get background information and check if my experience was relevant to the position. After, three assessments were sent for completion. Once completed, I was called for a second round of interview on-site. It was a panel interview with two engineers and one HR representative.
