Alex Lee – Why Work For Us?

Who is Alex Lee

"If your customers are successful and your suppliers are successful, then you will be successful."

This was the philosophy of our founder, Moses George, and later his two sons, Alex and Lee, when they purchased Merchants Produce Company in 1931.

This philosophy has stood the test of time for four generations, as the company has continued to grow and evolve into one of the largest food retail and wholesale distribution companies in the South-Eastern United States. All without losing its homegrown roots or its focus on customers, employees and our community.

85 years later, Alex Lee, Inc. works as a unifying force, guiding and supporting its two operating companies - Merchants Distributors, LLC (MDI), a wholesale grocery distributor operating in 12 different states with more than 1500 employees; and Lowes Foods, LLC, a grocery retailer with over 100 stores and 10,000 hosts.

Why do our customers believe in us? Because we never take them for granted. We work harder and smarter in order to always matter, to stay relevant, and to make a real difference.

A testament to our superior service is how we've helped thousands of independent supermarkets stand up and win against national chains and discount retailers.

Making a real difference is something that matters to our people. It's what keeps them here for the long term and gives them reason and purpose that extends beyond the norm. Our employees would also say that being part of a privately-held, family-owned business stands in stark contrast to many other companies. We have the freedom to think bigger and reach higher, without the bureaucracy of red tape getting in the way.

We also benefit from the inheritance of a value system that has guided our founders, and the generations following them, on their journey forward.

What's more, our culture is one that upholds continuity vs short-term results, and balanced with a passion for embracing the new, innovative and yet-to-be-thought-of.

Employees are the strength of our company, and our employment opportunities will see you working with some of the strongest players in the industry in a privately owned company that encourages free thinking through a deliberately flat structure.

To most of our executives, who may have built a career in public companies, the opportunity to focus on doing good work without a politically toxic environment is liberating.

It's amazing to see what happens when you take authentic Values, home grown roots and challenging goals, and blend it with fluidity and agility.  Fresh thinking and ground-breaking ideas are just the beginning.

We are looking for the brightest minds to join us on our journey to see what happens next!

Featured Employee - Nathan Hux

Nathan began his career with Alex Lee as an intern and has worked his way into his current role of programmer.  Nathan attended Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC and was surprised to learn that there were opportunities to program in his home town.  Nathan loves the area, so he thought that it would naturally be a good fit.

What does Nathan love most about working at Alex Lee?  "My co-workers.  The people here are awesome."  "It is like a family here, everyone gets along really well, and if you ever need anything, the people here are always willing to help."

In our 85 year history we've learned the value of nurturing deep connections within the communities we serve.

We give back to our communities in order to make them better places to live.  Our long-standing relationships with local food banks, local education and arts programs, as well as other national organizations are focused on improving the health and welfare of our communities.

What the George family began - and are still very much part of today - seems to empower us all.  In reality, we are all custodians of the same vision:

This is our Vision

We will be a progressive, profitable company that is always improving results and is recognized by its employees for providing opportunities to grow, both personally and professionally; appreciated by its customers and suppliers for providing quality products and services as efficiently as possible; respected by its communities for the value it and its employees add; and admiried for its integrity.

Our Mision

Customers are the focus of everything we do.  Our mission is to provide exceptional value in products and services.

I have been working at Alex Lee full-time (Less than a year)

I’ve been in the Restaurant/Food Industry for most of my life & will continue with the Customer Service skills & any other knowledge.

None that I can think of; but I am being Transferred to another store, due to too many people (too many cooks, boiling the food) so to speak.

    Advice to Management

More communication with each other & skills should be learned, hands on.
