I have been working at Alexandria City Public Schools full-time
Alexandria City is a very tight-knit, small town feel division that prides itself on having a very diverse community. If that sounds appealing to you then this is the place for you. Some might find it overbearing. The central office recently moved to an upgraded building with great access to transportation. The division as a whole is very dedicated to driving the mission which can be very rewarding, personally. Compensation and benefits are top notch for a local school system. You can't beat having Spring and Winter break on top of vacation days every year!
The division is lacking organization. I mentioned in the pros being moved to an upgraded building as a central office, but it already seems like we are running out of space within the building (after just one year). Administrators are always talking about strategic planning but its hard to witness those plans unfold when you are constantly adding new initiatives to the pot. Professional learning is all for the teachers. It would be nice to have some for administrators as well. I would have loved for my tenure to be long term, but it seems they don't invest and provide career opportunities for administrative support staff as they do teachers and education based administrators.
Advice to Management
School systems are a business. You need people who know how to run a business and not just those who are anxious to close the achievement gap. Hire diverse staff to keep up with the diversity in student population. Make smart hires and train to develop workers so you are able to delegate and there is no need to micro manage. Assess the roles and responsibilities of current workers so you are not over hiring for the same position.
I applied online. I interviewed at Alexandria City Public Schools.
Phone interview, individual interview then panel interview. I had to meet with the Department Chair as well as 2 academic principals during the interview process. It was a very formal interview and the process took about a week as I was hired late nearing the date that teachers had to be back at school.
