Altar'd State – Why Work For Us?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fqI-WdkT5s&t=16s

Altar'd State is an energetic fashion boutique that offers a distinctive shopping experience for women interested in the latest fashion finds, the most anticipated accessories and that next great gift. Whether she is 16 or 60, the common thread is her desire to share her personality through stylish, comfortable, on-trend clothes, shoes and accessories. Altar'd State customers can enjoy supporting an organization that promotes confidence, civic involvement and positivity through its merchandise and philosophy of giving back. Altar'd State more than a store, it's a movement.

Altar’d State started with a mission to fill a gap in the retail industry and change the world for the better. We began as one little shop - learning, growing, defining who we are. When we liked what we made, we branched out and continued developing along the way. Since 2009, we have grown our footprint from one fledgling retail shop to over 70 booming fashion boutiques across our region with no plans to stop.

December 1980:

Brian Mason bought his first article of clothing. This is a day he would never forget.

April 1992:

Aaron Walters took his first job in fashion retail. A seed was planted.

August 2007:

Mason and Walters met while working for a large clothing chain in Knoxville, Tennessee. The two worked to successfully reawaken a struggling division and formed a strong partnership along the way.

November 2008:

A down-turned economy began to cause some concern in the retail industry...well, and pretty much everywhere.

January 2009:

The two learned their employer would be filing bankruptcy and began talking about ways they could continue working together. They explored many options and eventually went their separate ways...or so they thought.

April 2009:

Mason and Walters met in Bentonville, Arkansas to develop the strategy for their store. In a small coffee shop, they sat down and wrote a business plan for a modernized Christian shopping experience. After a borderline healthy amount of coffee and thought, Altar'd State was born.

July 2009:

The duo, along with a few easily-persuaded others, traveled to Atlanta and Denver to experience Altar'd State's first official market trip.

November 2009:

The first Altar'd State opened in Knoxville as a modern Christian retail store and coffee shop. It received genuine support from the local community. Mason and Walters were happy with the early success, but still felt that the shop needed something different.

April 2010:

The budding retailer discovered a new, but promising, market opportunity to add fashion apparel, jewelry and accessories.

July 2010:

The Altar'd State team, now 5 full-time employees, set out on a major market trip. The store was already carrying some apparel, but it was during this trip that the major shift towards a unique fashion retailer occurred.

November 2010:

After a full year of evolution, Altar'd State transformed in to a popular women's fashion boutique and opened a second store in Birmingham, AL.

2011:

Altar'd State opened 9 more stores in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Virginia. Successes and lessons were a-plenty while Mason and Walters built a successful boutique that was truly different from other retailers.

Today:

Altar'd State operates over 100 boutiques in twenty-four states, with plans to continue growth. Our locations will always stand out for good and do their part to change the world for the better. Altar'd State is headquartered in Maryville, TN under the direction of Mason and Walters.

We are dedicated to improving the lives of our customers and enabling others to stand out for good with us. Through Mission Monday, we support local non-profit organizations in each of our stores' communities, donating 10% of every Monday's net proceeds. Our sponsored organizations change each season, allowing us to give toward a number of causes that are close to our hearts, including the hungry, animals and cancer. We also support our employees in their endeavors to stand out for good by sponsoring volunteer hours.

We take giving back seriously and desire that our efforts allow local communities around the world to flourish.

The Altar’d State family sponsors children in high-risk areas of Peru all year round. This sponsorship provides underprivileged children with clothing, education, food, shelter and psychological support.  The number of children in our sponsorship program grows each quarter, as our company grows.

Our goal is to provide the best guest experience imaginable. Your journey will enrich many lives. Set your personal and professional goals high. We have great confidence in your ability to achieve them.

stand out. for good. always.

I have been working at Altar'd State full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Let me preface by saying this: There are two types of retail employees in this world- the ones who purchase the "break and bake" cookie dough when they want cookies, or the ones who make their cookies with love, effort, and care using scratch ingredients.

Before I started my career with Altar'D State, I had spent nine years in retail working for companies who didn't trust me to run a business. They knew what was best. They knew more than me. I was unable to merchandise creatively, unable to invest time and love into my guests, and essentially ran someone else's businesses with no real personal affect or purpose. It was cold. It was about the bottom line, and I was a dime a dozen- a warm body, running a money box. The cookie dough was already pre-made, pre-packaged, and if I didn't follow the specific instructions that came with the dough... I had zero value. But that all changed when I joined the Altar'D State family.

I started as an assistant store manager at Altar'D State five years ago, and from that very first day it was a completely difference experience. I was personally responsible for EVERYTHING. For the first time in my retail career, someone trusted me to creatively solve problems, inspire a team, creatively merchandise... it was AMAZING. It was overwhelming. But more importantly... I was challenged. I was trusted. The company I worked for BELIEVED in me, and trusted ME to overcome those challenges. Not only was I allowed, but I was ENCOURAGED to make meaningful, impactful relationships with the guests who walked through my doors. They urged me to take personal interest in my people, and they valued comprehensive, creative merchandising. Gone were the days of the money box- I was now a part of something bigger than myself. I had purpose behind my profession- a mission to inspire mother's and daughters, to give them a place of peace, a place of rejuvenation, and of refreshing. A place where every effort I made, every challenge I concurred, meant a child's life was changed forever in Peru, and a local charity that directly affected my community was blessed.

In the first three and half years I received three promotions: first to store manager, then again to store manager of a flagship location, and now I’m a member of the Altar’D State merchant team. I will say, that with every new position I have had to work harder (and smarter) than I have ever worked in my career, but I have also experienced greater personal and professional growth as a result, and I am thankful for being a part of a company that effectively challenges me at every turn- and more importantly believes in my ability to overcome those challenges and to grow.

Every day I am fulfilled, and blessed beyond measure because the Lord brought me into a family that allows me to perfectly marry my personal passions with my professional pursuits, and with every challenge, every hurdle… there is a peace that what I do is with purpose. I leave each day knowing that what I did had an impact on someone’s life. Someone, either through our volunteer efforts locally, our Mission Monday program nationally, or through our child sponsorships in Peru…. was blessed because I worked as unto the Lord that day. I have been blessed beyond what I could ever ask or think, because I have more than a job here at Altar’D State- I have a calling.

    Cons

Cons for any position within any company are a matter of perspective. There are always processes and operations that an organization can improve upon, just as there are always areas of opportunity within each individual person who comprises said company. Altar'D State, unlike any other retailer I have worked for in 14 years, is a company that recognizes they aren't perfect, and continually looks for and proactively takes action on what it can do better as an employer- from both an external and internal guest experience perspective. And in a retail atmosphere where many corporations are closing doors as a result of their inability to change and empathize, I can assure you Altar'D State is continually looking for ways to do right by it's family members, and improve on any and all areas of friction.

When people ask me what it takes to be successful at Altar'D State, it really boils down to three questions you need to ask yourself: 1.) Do you have a heart for what this company has a heart for? 2.) Do you believe in the give-back? 3.) Do you have a servant's heart?

If you answer no to any of those questions, then this is probably not the right place for you. And that's ok. It isn't for everyone. It takes a person who is willing to ask what other's needs are before they clock out for the day. It takes a person who views their position as a stewardship as opposed to a right of passage. And it takes a person who genuinely, deeply wants to make a positive impact both on their immediate teams, and their communities at large... every single day- an attitude of excellence and a dedication to serving others. Essentially... standing out for good.

    Interview

Quick and easy! One of the best interviews I have ever had. The manager was very engaging and the interview questions were your typical questions asked in any interview, very situational.
