American Bible Society – Why Work For Us?

Through prayer and collaboration with partners, we’ve identified three urgent areas of Scripture ministry to focus on in the next 10 years.

American Bible Society - Changing Lives with God's Word from American Bible Society on Vimeo.

Transforming America

In the United States today, every household has an average of 3-4 Bibles. But only a fraction of Americans connect with the Bible on a regular basis. Whether they don’t have time to read it, don’t know where to start, or question the Bible’s relevance in their lives, Americans need help engaging with Scripture.

Through a campaign focused on transforming America with God’s Word, we’re working to help people find the support and guidance they need to encounter Christ in the Bible. Our two-part approach includes advocating for the Bible in culture and equipping local churches and communities to share Scripture with those who need it most, to see 100 million people in the United States interacting with the Bible by 2026.

Trauma Healing

More than 1 billion people in the world have experienced trauma. In the aftermath of the world’s greatest tragedies—including war, famine, domestic violence, and abuse—people lose hope. They feel trapped in a cycle of reliving their pain and struggle to believe that God can heal their wounds. But Scripture contains a message of hope that can bring healing.

Through Bible-based trauma healing work carried out in communities around the world, trained facilitators meet people at this point of great suffering and need. The program’s Bible-based curriculum equips facilitators to restore broken lives and transform painful memories into hopeful futures.

Translation

More than 1,700 languages do not even have a Scripture translation started. To provide speakers of these languages with access to God’s Word—and complete the most accurate translations in the fastest amount of time possible—Bible translators around the world need additional training and updated equipment.

By collaborating with ministry and financial partners, Bible translation projects are accelerating across the globe. A full translation can now be completed in 12 years; in the 1980s, the same job took 35 years to finish. This work has already made a life-changing difference for people waiting to read God’s Word in their language. But about 165 million people are still waiting.

With a strong commitment to Bible translation, we look forward to seeing 100 percent of languages opened for Scripture engagement by 2026.

From bustling city streets to war-torn villages, we strive to make the Bible available and alive so that all people may experience the life-changing message of God’s Word.

We work in the U.S.: We strive to change the landscape of Bible engagement in this country by:

  • Partnering with church leaders in major U.S. cities to promote Scripture engagement
  • Advocating for the Bible in American culture
  • Equipping ministry leaders with customized Bible resources

We work in faraway places: We yearn for a world where every person in every country has access to God’s Word. That’s why we work with partners to:

  • Translate the Bible into all languages
  • Distribute God’s Word to unreached communities
  • Restore broken lives through Scripture-based trauma healing programs

At American Bible Society, we envision a different world—one where all people have the opportunity to experience the life-changing message of God’s Word.

What's the best part about working at American Bible Society?

Aside from the mission and having your efforts go toward something you value, we try to be results-oriented in a way that values people. And we have so many backgrounds represented.

What initially attracted you to American Bible Society?

The opportunity to come alongside a growing team and learn from professionals in my field—and collaborate!

What's your favorite space in the office?

The couches where the sun comes in through the windows!

Annie, Partner Advancement Specialist

What's the best part about working at American Bible Society?

I really love the culture of diversity and people who are passionate about a cause that's clearly articulated. You don't have to question the direction of the organization.

What initially attracted you to American Bible Society?

I had a few friends who were here—I had been in fundraising positions previously, and that allowed me to use those experiences in this organization.

What's your favorite space in the office?

I love the Hub. I love that it feels like a collection of treehouses and picnic tables...it's definitely not a sterile environment.

What would you tell someone who's thinking about working here?

Know that this is an organization where you won't be able to hide, where your gifts and skills will be challenged and integrated into the team. If you're looking to grow and be challenged, to think and engage spiritually and professionally, this would be a good fit.

Shamalia, Senior Manager, Frontline Scripture Engagement

What's the best part about working at American Bible Society?

My colleagues. I have the best boss ever. He empowers us, he trusts us, he believes in us. And with the other staff—it's like working with family.

What initially attracted you to American Bible Society?

I wanted to continue in ministry. I have the business skills, but the main goal is to minister to people's hearts. This aligned with my own vision and calling.

What's your favorite space in the office?

Probably the HUB; having couches and seeing the city and sunshine when you're eating lunch.

What would you tell someone who's thinking about working here?

It's a great place to work. There are opportunities for growth. Be willing to get to know people and branch out and learn! Be willing to connect.

Malcolm, Philadelphia Ministry Mobilizer

What's the best part about working at American Bible Society?

Here, there is a passion, there is an energy, there is a focus. It's not suited for everyone. But those who are looking for this level of spiritual expression, to God be the glory. We can show how faith can be integrated into lives without being coercive or unhealthy. This is faith in action. Here we get the opportunity to see it lived out and grow.

What's your favorite space in the office?

Aside from here in my office, I so value our chapel space. I think it speaks volumes about the integrity of the organization and importance to have communion with God. Particularly, space for him! It points out our value set. When we're gathered in the Hub, that becomes a sacred space, too.

What would you tell someone who's thinking about working here?

We are a different experience. We are an authentically loving community of believers, not discounting our differences. And we'll make room for you. We'll value your gifting as you present it in community, and look for opportunities for genuine fellowship.

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at American Bible Society (Philadelphia, PA) in March 2017.

    Interview

Since I live in Singapore, the interview process is a bit more challenging. HR assistant sent a voicemail to my sister-in-law's celfone. I sent a voicemail and texted her via Skype. She emailed me to schedule an interview. Then we had an hour-long Skype phone interview. Since I live in Singapore, this was 2 pm ET but 2 am SG time. She promised to set up one-on-one Skype videocall with Line Supervisor. I am still waiting for that second interview to be set up.
