American Public University System (APUS) is proud to employ over 900 staff members in three different office locations as well as in many remote positions.   APUS has office locations in Charles Town, WV, Manassas, VA and Columbia, MD. American Public University System (APUS) is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and a member of the North Central Association. 100% of courses are taught in an online format using Sakai as the foundation Learning Management System (LMS). APUS has a rolling academic year that is different from traditional institutions, which typically operate on an academic year normally defined by fall and spring semesters. At APUS, courses start each month and are offered in 8- and 16-week formats. Students may take a combination of 8- and 16-week classes and may overlap class starts to fit their individual schedules.


Undergraduate Instructors must hold a minimum of a master's degree from a regionally accredited institution, or a master's degree with a minimum of 18 semester hours in the discipline they wish to teach. Other requirements may apply. Graduate level faculty must hold a terminal degree in the respective discipline.


Many of our students serve our country, both in the military and public sector. Most have full-time careers and families.     I applied online. I interviewed at American Public University System (Charles Town, WV) in August 2017.


    I was called on a Wednesday afternoon for interviews on the following day with the SVP, Operations, Chief of Staff and the Provost. I was given no overview or prep for the position. Two weeks later, I interviewed with the Corporate Controller and Corporate CFO.

    The interviews on Thursday were very engaging and results and accomplishment oriented.

    The interview with the CFO was very different. I found him to be arrogant, rude and condescending. He focused on technical accounting questions which were not part of the job requirements. I asked about significant projects and areas of focus for the upcoming year. One of the major projects was a new front end system that two of the four interviewers had mentioned as a priority. He was VERY put off that I knew of the project and told me I should not know about that and even lectured me. When I asked questions about risk, he put it back to me and did not answer from his perspective.

    There seems to be a disconnect between what the CFO is looking for and what the others on the leadership team are looking for. The position reports to the SVP of Operations not the CFO.
