When I was in the market for my next opportunity, there were several factors that were important to me. “I am a member of the software development team in Atlanta and have been at AppRiver for almost 4 years. I learned early on that AppRiver is different from other places I've worked. A couple of weeks after joining the company, I was in a team planning meeting. Those in the meeting included junior, mid and senior level developers. In my past experiences, most meetings were dominated by managers or those who were the most outspoken. This meeting at AppRiver was different. When a topic was on the table for discussion, our team lead would go around the room and ask every single person to share their thoughts on the topic, regardless of the person's role, title, or skill level. "Before I started working at AppRiver, I was a manager at a grocery store in the area. I was working between 60 and 80 hours a week putting groceries on the shelf. I had been in these customer service types of jobs since I was 16, and I wasn’t sure what the future held for my career. I studied computer science in college, but I had a hard time finding the right opportunity to use my education. I was talking to a friend one day and he told me how much he liked working at AppRiver. We like to joke that we were two guys and a spam filter back then. Only it isn’t a joke. Mike was the sales department and I was support. (We alternated being HR in case one of us had a complaint!) I have been working at AppRiver full-time (Less than a year)
Great commute, friendly co-workers, lots of perks for employees like fresh fruit every week, massages, monthly cook-outs, flexible schedules, great benefits for the area. They really do believe in making everyday a phenomenal day for employees.
Work environment is a bit drab but I think it's more the building, doesn't fit the culture of the company. Has an old banker's office feel. Interview process is slow but if you already have a job then the process is more bearable.
Advice to Management
Update the building, slap some paint on the walls, update a few things... let the building tell the story of the culture as well. Find ways to improve the interview process. HR was responsive but meeting with the department managers was beyond slow.
The process took 4 days. I interviewed at AppRiver (Gulf Breeze, FL) in July 2011.
Applied online and received a phone call requesting a time for a phone interview.
Spoke with the senior hr rep and enjoyed the conversation. They asked a lot of questions about different technologies related to databases, web services, security, and multi-threading.
