Originally known as Interactive Systems and The VINE Company, Appriss was founded by Mike Davis and Yung Nguyen. The two worked with Jefferson County, Kentucky government officials to develop the nation's first automated victim information and notification system after the murder of Mary Byron by her former boyfriend in 1993.
Davis and Nguyen unveiled VINE® (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) in Jefferson County exactly one year after Mary's murder. Since then, thousands of communities in nearly every state have adopted Appriss technology and services. In 2000, the company's name was changed to coincide with an expanded scope of services.
Appriss is derived from the word "apprise," which means "to notify."
Today, Appriss is constantly exploring new ways to keep our communities safe and informed. Our flagship product, VINE®, is the nation's leading automated victim notification solution. JusticeXchange provides access to the nation's largest near real-time data network of incarcerated persons. Appriss is the technology provider for NPLEx (National Precursor Log Exchange), an electronic tracking service used to track and block the illegal sale of over-the-counter cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine.
Appriss also specializes in solutions that provide government agencies with innovative ways to manage and provide access to public information, including BuyCrash.com, a revolutionary approach for making accident reports available to the public, online.
Appriss also provides a smartphone app for sheriffs’ offices to help them communicate more effectively with their communities. The app is provided at no cost to sheriffs who offer VINE.

True or false? Around Easter, most CEOs dress in bunny ears and deliver candy to sugar-starved engineers. Well, at Appriss, that statement is resoundingly true. Our open culture fosters creativity and productivity by allowing employees to work in a way that best suits their individual personalities. Are blue jeans a staple in your wardrobe? No problem. Do you prefer to close the door and write brilliant code in an office that resembles the bat cave? We like it. You know what else we like? Don’t get us wrong. We have impeccably high standards; demanding the best of each employee is standard Appriss practice. Free health insurance
No, we aren't lying. Employees who participate in our wellness program pay zero, zip, nada in health insurance premiums. Not only that, but maintain, or improve your health while working at Appriss, and we'll actually pay you to be on our health insurance plan. WHO DOES THAT!?! No joke. You can actually make money off of our insurance plan.
In 2010, Appriss opened an on-site clinic; it was the first and is still one of the only on-site clinics in the region. Visits to the clinic are free for any participating member of our health insurance plan and generic prescriptions from the clinic are free as well. The opening of the clinic signifies Appriss’ fundamental view of health care. By providing employees and their families the opportunity to access free health care on site, Appriss is placing an emphasis on wellness as well as creatively finding a way to address rising health-care costs without increasing the burden on employees.
Fruit Cart Day
Despite all the focus on individuality here at Appriss, all employees have one common defining characteristic … they like to eat. Like, really, really like to eat. Don’t worry; you won’t again revisit the Freshman 15 when you start working at Appriss because once a week an Appriss employee (including members of our Senior Team) walks around the building with a cart chock-full of fruit. In addition to supplying fellow employees with an afternoon snack, fruit-carting allows employees to get to know their colleagues a little better and to talk to and ask questions of the leaders of the company.
Run Appriss Run
There are all kinds of reasons to run. Fitness. Mental clarity. Zombie escape. Appriss is assisting employees in their pursuit of moving faster than whatever it is that’s chasing them by sponsoring a program that reimburses employees for participation in road races or charity walks. Those who coordinate and walk or run as an Appriss Team in those events can receive t-shirts and hats to show off their “Appriss Cares” spirit.
Results Only Work Environment
At Appriss, management cares about your performance, not how often you are present in the office. Utilizing a system called Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE), the majority of Appriss employees are eligible to participate, allowing them to request and take time unlimited time off. This system respects our employee’s need to balance work with their other responsibilities and interests, while trusting them to be accountable for performance.

Some of the existing software has some technical debt. Aggressive product development schedules don't allocate enough time for upgrading/rewriting older systems.
Advice to Management
Tend to the older software while it is still manageable.
I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Appriss (Louisville, KY) in January 2016.
It was fast, boring and in the end pointless. Very regrettable. I wish I had never applied. They have no sick time. Your vacation time and sick time is the same. God forbid you take a vacation and then get sick a few months later.
