Aspera – Why Work For Us?

Aspera’s unwavering mission is to create the next-generation software technologies that move the world’s large data at maximum speed, regardless of file size, transfer distance and network conditions. With the unstoppable explosion of Big Data in a world where IT and networking infrastructures are more diverse and flexible than ever, Aspera focuses on supplying innovative data transfer solutions that help organizations operate and collaborate more effectively on a global scale.

At the root of Aspera’s success lies our innovative, patented, highly efficient bulk data transport technology: fasp™ (fast, adaptive, secure protocol). This technology is unique and core to all Aspera high-performance file transfer software. Consistently ranked first in every WAN transfer throughput benchmark it was ever evaluated in, fasp outperforms software and hardware WAN acceleration solutions alike.

With more than 1,700 customers and over 16,000 active software licenses being used worldwide, Aspera serves all industries that need to move large volumes of data over wide area networks in practical timeframes, such as enterprise IT, games and software development, government, legal & eDiscovery, life sciences, media & entertainment and oil & gas. A pioneer in the enablement of high-speed, data-intensive workflows throughout the enterprise, Aspera has unlocked the cloud for big data with high-performance digital transport, now available on demand.

Founded in 2004 and experiencing remarkable growth, Aspera is profitable, privately held and headquartered in Emeryville, California with satellite offices in the United Kingdom, France and Singapore. Aspera software can be purchased directly from us and through an expansive network of reselling partners worldwide. In addition to offering a complete portfolio of software products and a comprehensive SDK platform, Aspera provides engineering services to support the custom-tailored implementation of our solutions and transfer technology in all types of enterprises. We always welcome opportunities for strategic alliances and partnerships with cutting-edge companies large and small.

Our philosophy of innovation is fused into Aspera’s DNA, always top of mind with our team, and built into the core technology and software products that fuel the company’s consistent and rapid growth. The company’s co-founders, Michelle Munson and Serban Simu, selected the name Aspera to express the universal ideals or hope and aspiration through challenges. From the Latin roots "asper" meaning "rough" or "hard", and "spera" meaning "hope", and mottos like "ad astra per aspera" (to the stars through hard ways), Aspera describes our aspiration to create substantial core technologies that solve the difficult problems in network data delivery.

Aspera’s patented fasp™ transport technology is a proven standard for the high-speed movement of large files or large collections of files over wide area networks (WANs). Media enterprises, telecommunications operators, sports leagues, games and software publishers, life sciences organizations, law firms, government agencies, and Fortune 500 corporations rely on Aspera software for the business or mission-critical transport of their most valuable digital assets.

Aspera software solutions bring breakthrough cost savings and efficiency gains to organizations that need to move large volumes of data over public and private IP networks. Easy-to-deploy, fully cross-platform, file type and network type agnostic, Aspera solutions deliver unprecedented levels of transfer performance to file-based workflows – including maximum speed, security, and bandwidth efficiency – and are widely used across a variety of industries all over the globe, transporting petabytes of data each day.

The performance limitations of ubiquitous transfer applications such as FTP or HTTP are a direct result of the inherent bottlenecks of TCP, the traditional protocol used to reliably transfer data over IP networks. Aspera’s patented technology brings true meaning to high-performance digital transport by simply eliminating the bottlenecks of TCP and delivering maximum transfer speed regardless of network conditions and transfer distance. With bulletproof security and reliability built-in, Aspera software provides users with unprecedented bandwidth management allowing for sophisticated transfer prioritization and automatic protection of other IP traffic.

Leading companies across multiple industries are bringing high-performance transport capabilities to their products, systems and services by building upon Aspera’s open architecture SDK. Aspera’s innovative fasp™ protocol is providing superior file transfer capabilities to a variety of solutions, including specialized digital asset and media management systems, high-performance storage, cloud services, integrated media platforms, workflow and automation engines, high-speed file delivery tools, leading media production and transformation software, video management and publishing platforms and more.

Aspera is an ideal place for innovative and ambitious engineers and entrepreneurial technologists. We are a worldwide leader in high performance data transport software. Work at Aspera is an opportunity to develop interesting emerging technologies and have a great time in the process. Our offices are an open plan located in the tech corridor of Emeryville in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although we work hard, we also enjoy one another’s company. Engineering and sales teams collaborate in small teams on a daily basis, and play soccer together when the weather permits. We even have a great company dog named Luke, who enjoys taking us for walks.

Aspera, now an IBM Company, is an innovative software company focused on pure goals: creating impactful new technology for data movement over IP, and great products, serving its customers with excellnce, and providing a gratifying experience for the people in its team. The company is known for its dedication to excellence, its one-of-kind products and a very down-to-earth equality culture. Everyone is valued and the potential to learn and impact the product and business results is almost guaranteed.

Demands are high due to constant growth and and most people in the company are spread thin. The team is constantly growing with new talent, but it still never enough to entirely catch up. This can be a pro or a con depending on your point of view.

    Advice to Management

In truth, I am the CEO. The role has pushed me to mature, and hopefully the company's consistent high growth and success helps offset the growing pains of the past. Aspera is here for the long term and we are building the company and the team with a long term horizon in mind.

    Software Engineer Interview

    Average Interview

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Aspera (Emeryville, CA) in July 2015.

First steps are a coding challenge and phone screen or two. Everyone gets the same coding challenge, so efficiency and elegance of the solution is paramount. The candidate has a couple days to complete it. The first phone screen is a chat with HR or a recruiter to gauge candidate's fit with the company culture and job openings. Then there's a phone screen with the head of engineering or a project lead to gauge technical skill. The next step is the onsite which consists of 4 or 5 interviews with the heads of various projects/departments. Each interviewer has their own strategy and agenda. Questions run the gamut from describing language-specific terms, concepts, and gotchas, to descriptions of foundational concepts, to white-boarding problems of varying difficulty. One interviewer asked me to look at some simple code written in a made-up programming language and talk about it what it might do, whether it works, etc. At the end of the onsite I met the VP of HR (who maintained regular contact throughout the hiring process). I had a follow-up phone interview with the CTO a few days later which included a short coding challenge, and then a final phone call with the CEO to discuss my background and how my expectations aligned with the goals/values of the company.

    Interview Questions

    • Define/discuss REST, CRUD, CORS, HTTP verbs, various CSS selectors and properties, SSH, SSL, TCP/IP, SQL/NoSQL DBs, MVC architecture, stacks vs. queues and their use cases, distributed systems, etc.   2 Answers
