Avalara – Why Work For Us?

Avalara helps businesses of all sizes achieve compliance with sales and excise tax, VAT and other transactional tax requirements by delivering comprehensive, automated, cloud-based solutions that are fast, accurate and easy to use. Avalara’s end-to-end suite of solutions is designed to effectively manage complicated and burdensome tax compliance obligations imposed by state, local and other taxing authorities in the United States and internationally.

We offer integrations with more financial, e-commerce, point-of-sales and mobile applications than any other transactional-tax solution on the market.

Today our tax decision engine processes more than 1.7 million tax calculations every day. We file more than 500,000 tax returns every year for more than 25,000 licensed users throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad. And with the stunning growth we’ve been experiencing, you can know that as sure as you're reading this, those numbers are already outdated.

Jobs at Avalara

An idea so big, we make sales tax exciting.

We're the first to admit it - sales tax isn't sexy. But revolutionizing fundamental business processes -- that's big time. And that's what we're doing everyday, bringing technology to bear on the arcane process of sales tax calculation, reporting and remitting. When you think about it, that's a key step in every sales transaction, every day, everywhere. From development to finance, consulting to sales, marketing to customer service, we're working hard to shine the light on a better way.

From the beginning, we've said that "we make sales tax less taxing." And while there's definitely a start-up energy at Avalara, we have a lot of fun along the way. From summer barbecues to evening get-togethers in the Tiki Lounge, we take that whole "work hard, play hard" thing to heart.

If that sounds like an exciting challenge - and if you thrive in a hyper-growth environment- dig a little deeper to see if life as an Avalarian is for you. We've included some key information here on this page that will give you a feel for who we are and what we do. For more, check our resources page.

    Easy Interview

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Avalara (Durham, NC) in July 2019.

The first interview was about 20 minutes long with one of the corporate recruiters, and it turned me off real fast. He repeatedly referred to me as a "Junior", although I never once refer to myself that way. With two years of industry experience and a job that promoted me beyond the title of "Junior", I felt that was incredibly presumptive and rude, regardless of how they might classify someone with my experience-level at their company. It speaks of corporate formulas to determine worth. The recruiter seemed to think I should be grateful they'd consider someone of my experience level.

The recruiter was also not well versed on the team's technical stack. Simply said it was "PHP and Postgres", but couldn't verify what the Frontend tech was (yes, I know PHP can be used for Frontend technology, but the recruiter didn't know enough to confirm or deny this).

The last and final offense was how difficult it was to reschedule the technical interview. It took two full business days before I got a response back from the recruiter confirming they'd received my message to reschedule. At this point we were less than 24 hours from the original interview time. I had to follow up twice before I got that response. When the recruiter finally did respond, he rescheduled the interview for a time the following day without asking me if I was available during that time. I was not.

After all of this, I determined Avalara would not be a good cultural fit so I withdrew myself from the interview process.
