Avalere Health – Why Work For Us?

Avalere Health, an Inovalon company, is a strategic advisory company whose core purpose is to create innovative solutions to complex healthcare problems. Based in Washington, D.C., the firm delivers actionable insights, business intelligence tools and custom analytics for leaders in healthcare business and policy. Avalere's experts span 230 staff drawn from Fortune 500 healthcare companies, the federal government (e.g., CMS, OMB, CBO and the Congress), top consultancies and nonprofits. The firm offers deep substance on the full range of healthcare business issues affecting the Fortune 500 healthcare companies. Avalere’s focus on strategy is supported by a rigorous, in-house analytic research group that uses public and private data to generate quantitative insight. Through events, publications and interactive programs, Avalere insights are accessible to a broad range of customers.

We are a values-driven organization. Our values, though aspirational, touch everything that we do as individuals, teams, and as an organization.

We set a high bar by offering substantive, high quality services and products to help our clients accomplish their missions in a world filled with change. Our depth of talent from business and government is unmatched, as are our data and analytics. Avalere’s work informs strategic decision making with cutting edge research so that our clients have the confidence that comes with understanding the facts.

Our clients get actionable answers built on our experience as industry executives, quality experts, academic researchers, financial analysts, and government officials. For each engagement, we build a multi-disciplinary team that draws on the right set of expertise to solve our clients’ most complex challenges. We pride ourselves on maintaining valuable long term relationships with leading healthcare organizations, and many of our relationships extend back to the firm’s beginning.

We solve problems, convene dialogue, analyze data, anticipate the future, improve communication, and position our clients to lead. We don't advocate, lobby, or play politics. We have strict ethical standards. When you see us in the press, expect neutrality and facts. Integrity in our work also extends to our aspirational vision: to be "the essential voice improving healthcare."

We innovate to create ideas that improve our customers’ positioning. We anticipate change in the healthcare system to make sure that our partners stay ahead of the curve. We deploy our ideas in innovative ways - through digital media, application development and creative collateral.

Avalere is a great place to work. The work is intellectually challenging, as being close to health system change can be intense. Our community is supportive, with a strong bench of staff. We’re also dedicated to helping the community outside of our office, and provide financial and in-kind support to a range of charitable groups including Bread for the City in DC.

Make your mark. Avalere’s culture is one of close collaboration, candid and constructive feedback, and assignment of responsibilities on ability and availability, without undue emphasis on rank. We prize curiosity, resilience, a positive attitude, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Join us and get ready to make your mark on healthcare.

"Believe it or not, meetings are my favorite part of working at Avalere. They're always so energizing-- a group of really smart people coming together, sharing ideas freely, discussing how we can bring our collective knowledge, expertise, skills and perspectives to bear on a client’s needs."

Avalere has a close-knit group of people that enjoy close collaboration, candid and constructive feedback, and assignment of responsibilities on ability and availability, without undue emphasis on rank.

Elizabeth Carpenter
"What sets Avalere apart is a balanced approach to solving clients’ problems and a 360 degree view of the healthcare industry. Our comprehensive perspective brings cutting-edge thinking to our clients and challenges us to stay ahead of the latest industry trends."

In 2005, inspired by the Latin word "valere," which means "strong and of good health," we renamed the firm Avalere. Our logo is inspired by the migration of birds that travel long distances in a “V” formation. The special concept of leadership reflects our approach to teamwork and the promise of collaboration.

Biruk Bekele
“Avalere’s culture encourages independent curiosity and outside-the-box thinking. This environment has helped me to develop a new perspective on the healthcare space and become a subject matter expert across a wide variety of topics. Senior leadership’s willingness to share their knowledge and insights from their years of hands on industry and government experience further solidifies an Avalere culture of continuous learning and mentorship.”

We are deep in content, bringing a diverse perspective to the marketplace. Integrity in our work extends to our aspirational vision.

Kai Pantin
"Our community extends past our walls into the greater D.C. community. Avalere has a philanthropic relationship with Bread for the City, an organization whose mission is to provide vulnerable residents of D.C. with comprehensive services. It has been a privilege to volunteer alongside my colleagues to support this cause."

We’re located in Washington, D.C.’s vibrant Dupont Circle, where we are conscious of being part of a larger community. We’ve made a commitment to that community through financial and in-kind support to a range of charitable groups.

Kristi Mitchell
"Last summer we introduced Journal Club as a way to support professional development around critical thinking, public speaking and staff mentorship. Through this process, staff have gained invaluable insight to contemporary policy analysis and health services research that track the evolving health policy landscape."

Our commitment to an intellectually stimulating workplace means regular training and professional development opportunities that enable staff to grow in their expertise and better utilize their tools and talents.

Alex Goolsby
“We have a very fun community feel at Avalere, which only enhances our level of work. Whether we are gathering for staff birthdays or our wonderful all-staff parties, we get to know each other quite well. The vibe around our office is pure energy. With such a great floor plan, it allows us to connect with one another not only in our conference rooms, but also as we bump into each other in the hallway.”

Sarah Donovan
“There is no typical day at Avalere…as our customers evolve to respond to new challenges and opportunities in the market, so do we. We are client centered at our core – it keeps us on our toes and makes every day unique and different.”

Our work, deeply immersed at the nexus of health system change, is intellectually challenging and relevant. With a strong bench of staff who are recognized leaders in their subject areas, we support our clients and each other as we work toward our mission of being the essential voice in healthcare.

John Linnehan
“What I like most about Avalere Health is that it has both diversity and depth in almost all the areas that impact health policy as it relates to business strategy. Therefore while I am able to contribute substantively in my area of expertise, I am always awed by what others in the firm know and I have yet to learn from them.”

We are a vibrant community of business and policy analysts working with outstanding healthcare organizations to solve their most pressing and fundamental strategic needs.

We are flexible in our approach to work schedules and work locations. That extends to our benefits package and our approach to work-life balance. We offer a robust benefits package with special programs – TeleHealth, health concierge service, legal services membership – to support staff in their work and private lives. In addition to a well-rounded benefits package, staff appreciate a culture that focuses on team contributions and downplays hierarchy. Junior staff have the opportunity to work closely with seasoned staff in an environment where sharing expertise and developing the next generation of experts is a natural outgrowth of our learning culture. Staff feedback at all levels is prized whether it’s about business or our culture. We seek input so we can make changes that matter.

We know that attracting the best people means meeting them where they are right now in their careers and lives.

Every staff member comes in the door with a 30-60-90-day plan that clearly outlines short-term goals and expectations. This keeps us on our toes to ensure we’re delivering the right training around tools, processes, and the business so that new staff can hit the ground running.

In addition, you’ll have a Peer Ambassador to show you the ropes and lend an ear when you need one. Our onboarding program includes training that will expose you to the information you need right away and the people who will be crucial to your success.

Training and Development

You’ll have an Individual Development Plan that identifies trainings and development opportunities that are tailored to your skills, interests, and career goals. Whether it’s the basics of consulting to building project budgets to communication and negotiation skills, you’ll find training for where you are in your career to help move you to the next level. In addition to leadership development programs, we offer one-on-one professional coaching and support individualized learning through seminars and courses that build your skills.

Incredibly intelligent people at all levels of the organization. These guys have an international reach and the data assets to make a real difference.

Incredibly cool projects to work on.

Tons of thought leaders to learn from. People who have made a difference in the healthcare space.

I think if you find yourself in a bubble of negativity it can be hard to feel a part of the organization. Dysfunction between silos in the organization can be a bit much. And are frankly out of place is an org this small.

I don’t care care how broken data assets are as long as we are a team dedicated to improving our company and are committed to moving forward with the support of our leadership. You gotta meet me halfway tho.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest enacting a mentor system. Each new employee would have a seasoned employee to describe the organizational culture as it exists. Who can check in on new employees.

Avalere and the work we do is stressful. Feeling heard and appreciated is half the battle for some of the less outgoing employees.

Dan, what you have done here to create an organization the continues to grow and adapt and to exist this log is nothing short of amazing. Proud to have worked for you.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at Avalere Health in September 2015.

A single day of 4-5 rounds of interviews with various employees. Interviews were content specific but also included questions regarding working style and preferred working environment. One interviewer took me out for coffee to discuss broadly how my personality might fit with in the team. Overall it was a very positive experience and the interview process would ultimately be a good preview of what it's like to work here.
