    Problem Based Learning in Math and the 2018 Question

    Every year I tell my students that I have a challenge for them. I tell them that my past students have been able to use the digits of the current year (in this case 2, 0, 1 and 8) to generate expressions equivalent to the numbers 1 through 100.

    Pros

    The school prioritizes organizational health and development. The culture has changed considerably in the last several years to be focused on employee development. There's a very strong commitment to mission. The organization prioritizes innovation and definitely wants to say yes. Decision making is not political.

    Cons

    It's a growing organization with a high rate of change. This pace and culture isn't for everyone. The organizational structure is complex. It's not a political place, but it can be challenging for new people to navigate. There's clear alignment on pedagogy, approach, and strategy. People who aren't aligned don't last long.

    Application

    I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Avenues: The World School in April 2015.

    Interview

    There was a phone interview during which the interviewer was very open and told me that the position had already been filled, but they needed to do some interviews for internal reasons. I agreed to an in-person interview and sample lesson as an opportunity to network and practice interviewing.

    The school administrators (head of the middle school and science department chair) both made excellent impressions on me. They were intelligent and asked insightful questions. I felt the place was well-run and that the staff was happy to be there. The students were lovely. The science department chair and I had an excellent conversation about the nuts and bolts of developing innovative and effective lessons.
