  • How do you memorialize one of the most controversial figures in American history? 11th graders tackle this difficult task.

A Memorial Project for a Controversial Figure

One of the most controversial figures in American history is Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. During his lifetime, he was beloved by many as the first "man of the people" to be elected president. Yet, others viewed him as a tyrannical figure whose personal and governmental actions were wildly out of step with norms at the time.

  • In science class, our 5th graders tackle the Case of the Kidnapped Python, the Case of the Stolen Laptop and other tough cases as part of their crime scene investigation project.

Fifth Grade Crime Solvers, at the Ready

Now in its third year, the 5th grade crime scene investigation project not only brought wrongdoers to justice but also tied into the broader themes of their work in World Course, reading workshop and art.

Avenues: The World School is a top-tier school with campuses in New York City and São Paulo, Brazil, offering a truly global education, that will expand to more of the world’s leading cities in coming years.

Teaching and learning happens through dual language immersion and challenging interdisciplinary projects. A culture of creativity and collaboration, along with state-of-the-art technology, pervade the school. I have been working at Avenues: The World School full-time

The school prioritizes organizational health and development. The culture has changed considerably in the last several years to be focused on employee development. There's a very strong commitment to mission. The organization prioritizes innovation and definitely wants to say yes. Decision making is not political.

It's a growing organization with a high rate of change. This pace and culture isn't for everyone. The organizational structure is complex. It's not a political place, but it can be challenging for new people to navigate. There's clear alignment on pedagogy, approach, and strategy. People who aren't aligned don't last long.

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Avenues: The World School (New York, NY).

The interview process was extremely prompt and professional. Instructions were clear on my classroom observation and the follow up questions were conducted in a different, comfortable room. I felt ready and prepared and while the atmosphere was professional, I was at ease due to the warm nature of the two people interviewing me.
