  • What does problem-based learning look like in math class? It looks like 6th graders excitedly challenging themselves to solve problems.

Problem Based Learning in Math and the 2018 Question

Every year I tell my students that I have a challenge for them. I tell them that my past students have been able to use the digits of the current year (in this case 2, 0, 1 and 8) to generate expressions equivalent to the numbers 1 through 100.

  • This is the first in a series of blog posts by our Lower Division technology integrators explaining what digital citizenship is, and why it’s so important.

What Is Digital Citizenship? Why Is It Important?

Our world is changing. It's changing faster than we know and often faster than any of us want to believe. I've even heard people say 65%, or even 85%, of the jobs that will exist in 2030 haven't been invented yet. As educators, these changes pose a real problem for us.

Avenues: The World School – Why Work For Us?

Avenues: The World School is a top-tier school with campuses in New York City and São Paulo, Brazil, offering a truly global education, that will expand to more of the world’s leading cities in coming years.

Teaching and learning happens through dual language immersion and challenging interdisciplinary projects. A culture of creativity and collaboration, along with state-of-the-art technology, pervade the school. Brilliant colleagues, with widely diverse experience, create a unique educational experience together.

Collaboration here isn't a buzzword: it's woven into everything we do. At Avenues, no one teaches on an island. Substantial time to collaborate is embedded into the schedule. Teacher teams, across multiple disciplines, design learning experiences together for a whole grade level. This intensity of collaboration is challenging as well as exciting: we're always evolving, learning from each other and seeking to improve.

“We will provide our faculty and staff members a special place to pursue the science and art of teaching … and be a place where careers, in and out of the classroom, can flourish.”
—Avenues: The World School mission statement

Imagine your career flourishing at Avenues.

More than just a learning community, Avenues is also a laboratory for innovation in education and a growing global network. To that end, we are always looking for faculty who embrace change, seek constant learning and are exceptionally collaborative.

Teachers collaborate intensively here, on immersion teams in the Early Learning Center and Lower Division and interdisciplinary cohorts in the Upper Division.

We don’t rely on precedent. Avenues teachers innovate in ways that not only move the school forward, but can have a real impact beyond the school walls as well. Everyone has a voice in improving how we operate, organize and teach.

The school prioritizes organizational health and development. The culture has changed considerably in the last several years to be focused on employee development. There's a very strong commitment to mission. The organization prioritizes innovation and definitely wants to say yes. Decision making is not political.

It's a growing organization with a high rate of change. This pace and culture isn't for everyone. The organizational structure is complex. It's not a political place, but it can be challenging for new people to navigate. There's clear alignment on pedagogy, approach, and strategy. People who aren't aligned don't last long.

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Avenues: The World School in April 2015.

There was a phone interview during which the interviewer was very open and told me that the position had already been filled, but they needed to do some interviews for internal reasons. I agreed to an in-person interview and sample lesson as an opportunity to network and practice interviewing.

The school administrators (head of the middle school and science department chair) both made excellent impressions on me. They were intelligent and asked insightful questions. I felt the place was well-run and that the staff was happy to be there. The students were lovely. The science department chair and I had an excellent conversation about the nuts and bolts of developing innovative and effective lessons.
