Avery Dennison is a global leader in labeling and packaging materials and solutions. The company’s applications and technologies are an integral part of products used in every major market and industry.
With operations in more than 50 countries and 25,000 employees worldwide, Avery Dennison serves customers with insights and innovations that help make brands more inspiring and the world more intelligent.
Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY) is a Fortune 500® company with sales of $6 billion from continuing operations in 2015. We are based in Glendale, California.
The Avery Dennison story begins in 1935, with just a few spare parts, one very bright idea and a $100 loan.
Ray Stanton (“Stan”) Avery, a struggling clerk in Los Angeles, invented a smarter way for stores to price their products, then went on to pioneer the labeling industry.
With a few simple materials—primarily used machine parts and a saber saw—Stan created and patented the first self-adhesive, die-cut labeling machine. His practical genius would ultimately yield eighteen patents and establish Avery Adhesives as the company that transformed how brands and businesses deliver information. In 1990, Avery International merged with Dennison Manufacturing to become Avery Dennison.
Today, we manufacture and distribute labeling and packaging materials in over 50 countries and employ more than 30,000 people. The flexibility and responsiveness afforded by our company's global footprint enables us to service our customers at key points throughout their supply chain.
In just over 80 years we have grown from one bright idea into a global corporation that continues to set new standards for quality and innovation in materials science.
Avery Dennison manufactures and distributes display graphics, labeling and packaging materials, retail graphic embellishments and RFID tags that companies around the world use to engage customers and efficiently manage their inventories. Our products are virtually everywhere you look, providing a crucial thread in the fabric of global commerce.
We sustain Stan Avery's spirit of curiosity through research, invention and development of new materials science products and processes. Our expertise in high-speed manufacturing, information display and management, logistics, branding, graphics and packaging enables us to impact a wide array of markets—from consumer packaged goods and apparel to transportation, architecture and healthcare.
We strive to make each customer's brand more inspiring and every process more intelligent.
Avery Dennison's extensive experience in our core businesses allows us to purchase, process, and deliver needed materials to key points in our customers' supply chains with rapid and globally consistent execution.
In the 21st century, the company will expand its footprint in emerging markets.
Our company vision is to make every brand more inspiring and the world more intelligent.
The pursuit of this vision has compelled us to align our businesses into a focused, customer-driven company that specializes in materials science. Our in-depth pool of expertise and global scale enable us to deliver insights, innovative products and intelligent solutions to customers all over the world.
At Avery Dennison, we deliver solutions that differentiate products and build loyalty for global brands. Here, each distinctive product, each technological leap forward, is brought to light in an energizing environment where teamwork and curiosity thrive. If you’re looking for a collaborative culture where bold ideas turn into action, this is the place for you. When you launch your career at Avery Dennison, you’ll help us create intelligent solutions for customers worldwide. Our team of over 30,000 employees from around the globe is inspired by the art of the possible, and motivated to continuously improve. It’s the passion behind our people that sets our workforce apart. And the reason why, at Avery Dennison, great people get even better every day.
I became interested in Avery Dennison because of the opportunity to develop my career beyond traditional areas of responsibility. In 2010, I made a cross-functional move from an operations role in Avery Dennison Label and Packing Materials business to a customer-facing position.
It was a bold move. I had to learn a completely different side of the business. But my experience in operations is a real advantage in my current customer-centric role. I’m better at mobilizing internal support to meet customer demands, and I have credibility when I talk with customers about our products and manufacturing capabilities. Customers familiar with my background will even ask me to walk through their shop floor and provide feedback.
My cross-functional move also inspired some of my colleagues to take their own careers in a new direction. At Avery Dennison, the most important thing is to have the mentality that you want to influence and create your own future — that you want to take your destiny into your own hands. This is not a company where you have to wait until somebody approaches you and takes you to the next level. It is an environment that really offers opportunity for those who are eager to learn, develop and go beyond the traditional career path.
2003 – Supply Chain Director, Label and Packaging Materials Europe
2005 – VP, Operations and Supply Chain, Label and Packaging Materials Europe
2010 – VP, Sales and Customer Service, Label and Packaging Materials Europe
I started a full-time internship at Avery Dennison just after technical high school. It was a great opportunity to see how the company operated and for the company to see how I could perform. In my responsibilities and workplace interactions, I wasn’t treated like an outsider, but rather, the same as any other employee. That meant a lot to me.
After I was hired, I continued and completed my university studies. After that, my career accelerated quickly. I earned Six Sigma Green Belt and Six Sigma black belt certifications, the last one in the U.S., and completed a short-term assignment in Leiden (the Netherlands).
My first regional role focused on creating synergy in product development. For this task, cross-functional support was very critical because product development involves nearly all of the departments in different stages. Even though Avery Dennison is a large corporation, there is a small company environment here in South America. We work really well together. We also have an excellent interaction with the technical teams from other regions and get great support from them.
Today, I see that employees have even more opportunities to develop. This goes beyond learning the technical parts of the job. If you want to advance your career, you have to learn to be a leader — to deal with people and processes.
As a director today, I absolutely encourage internships. It is valuable for students to learn from us, and it is valuable for Avery Dennison to bring fresh, new perspectives into the workplace. It’s very positive for both sides.

I worked at Avery Dennison part-time (More than 3 years)
Good salary, very flexible schedule with a lot of benefits, nice bonuses and good team. Managers are very professional and easy-going.
Sometimes I have problems with customers and that’s why I really felt myself in trouble. Working long hours, that’s what I really don’t like.
Advice to Management
You need to pay attention on your customers, because sometimes they tend to be rather rude. You should take care of your employees.
I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Avery Dennison (Oxford, OH) in September 2015.
On campus interview, I interviewed with who would end up being my manager. Very conversational, I did a lot of talking. They were very interested in whether I would be a good fit for the culture more than the technical experience I had in Finance at the time (as I didn't have any). Lots of behavioral based questions but nothing too tricky or intimidating.
