I have been working at BC Ferries full-time (More than 3 years)
Purportedly the best benefit package in Victoria
Good hours of operation and flexibility in work hours
Community focused; green-focus and charitable organizations
Endless opportunities for career path and promotion for the right person
Terrific company to start or end ones career
IT Department is quite dysfunctional
Weak leadership from directors and managers with technical knowledge but poor and/or no leadership/management/people skills
Gender and age discrimination is very apparent; gender inequity is a hot topic
Bullying and harassment are prohibited by BCF but seemingly tolerated within IT
Strong and valuable consultants whisked away to comply with "no more contractors" and yet exception made for one consultant; appointed key role in the organization and yet yet to deliver anything concrete
Lots of talk about resetting the culture however no signs of change, no communication about strategy, and no sense of urgency present.
Advice to Management
Mentor leadership team. Emphasize the importance of inclusion and recognition of efforts of all people and not just the chosen few.
Take workplace respect more seriously.
Ensure pay equity and promotion of women. Women do have a lot too bring to the table too but seem often overlooked. People in general should be seen for their motivation, experience, and skill rather than whether or not they fit into the "old boys club", "the network where the unwritten rules define the insiders and the outsiders. The standards that decide who is successful and who is not." This effects both men and women. "Don't be immediately impressed by swagger, firm handshakes, and conventional displays of confidence. If you see your employees performing well, yet are demonstrating their leadership in ways that are different than you’re used to, find out about their approach (pros and cons) instead of judging it." Jump onboard the 21st century train.
