Like many American success stories, BDO's proud past began with the vision of an entrepreneur. Twenty-two-year-old immigrant Maximilian (M.L.) Seidman emerged from a tenement on Manhattan's Lower East Side to open a one-room office on the city's Park Row. With little more than a good idea, personal drive to achieve, and a commitment to hard work, M.L. founded Seidman & Seidman in 1910.
Fast-forward . . .The firm known today as BDO is a leading accounting and consulting organization with an extensive national and global footprint, sophisticated and loyal clients, and a talented team of people. Yet, despite our size and stature, BDO remains a family business in spirit, holding steadfast to the ideals of competence, honesty and integrity, professionalism, responsibility and accountability, and dedication, M.L. and the Seidman family ingrained in the culture of the firm. These core values have helped BDO grow to serve clients through 49 offices and more than 400 independent alliance firm locations nationwide. As the U.S. independent Member Firm of BDO International Limited, BDO serves multinational clients through a global network of 1,328 offices in 152 countries.

From career options, to recruiting, to workflow management, we strive to find a mutually beneficial mixture of workplace commitment and day-to-day flexibility. Because after all, what’s good for you is good for us; in today’s 24/7, high-tech, global work reality, flexibility is essential.
Whether it’s something as large as a company-wide recycling initiative, or something as small as unplugging an unused device, BDO encourages its employees to take charge of their environmental impact. BDO Green is our commitment to finding ways to protect the planet, while at the same time reducing our operating costs. Because green business, it turns out, is good business.
From serving food at soup kitchens, to planting trees, to assisting the elderly, BDO’s volunteer program gives you the opportunity to give back to your community. Whether it’s participating in our nationwide Week of Service initiative, or pursuing projects of their own choosing, BDO Counts encourages employees to go beyond the typical corporate fundraiser, and to give their time to real, hands-on pursuits.
For eligible employees who dream about gaining work experience in different countries, BDO provides the opportunity to participate in our secondment program. These temporary international assignments will give you a chance to develop your professional skills in an international setting, and enhance your awareness of multinational clients. We’re a global business – we offer global experience, too.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time
The size of the company and the depth of resources that BDO offers sets it apart from large regional firms. For the fifth largest accounting and consulting services firm in the world, the culture in my office feels more like a smaller firm with a focus on flexibility, employee retainment, and development. No matter what your long term career goals are, you will be able to find and connect with mentors to help you succeed. I have worked at several different firms in my career and BDO offers the best mix of big firm resources and a true focus on people. In no way do I feel like "just a number".
As with any large firm, the challenge of inter-office staff sharing, travel requirements, and retaining millenials is present. The work is challenging and sometimes strenuous but the firm is actively promoting "day-to-day flex" to help professionals sprint and recover.
Advice to Management
Maintain a focus on organic growth as well as through M&A. Everyone I have been in contact with at a management level is very bright, insightful, and seems to care about the employees but to grow too big, too fast may be a challenge.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at BDO USA.
I applied online and got an email a few days later asking if I'd be available to do a phone interview. The phone interview seemed as if it was to just verify that I actually wanted the position and to see if I knew what I applied for. The next morning I get an email asking if I was available that Thursday or Friday for an in office interview. It was fairly simple, I had two separate interviews. Since the internship is got busy season, they really wanted to know if I was willing to put in the work. They then asked a few questions relating to past experience. After all that, they both told me about the firm. One talked about things going on recently and the other about what they offer their associates.
