It's no accident that BPM's motto is Because People Matter. We understand that motivated and talented employees are a successful company's greatest asset. We are driven by a practical, can-do, entrepreneurial spirit, and we value our staff as individuals, including the parts of them that go beyond balance sheets and tax filings. We are committed to:
Work-life balance: BPM believes in a workplace that allows for a balanced life, with time for family, creative pursuits and community involvement.
Valuing diversity Attracting and retaining a diverse, inclusive workforce is vital to BPM's ongoing success. Our multicultural employees represent more than 30 different countries and speak 21 different languages.
Opportunities for growth: Today’s young accountants will be tomorrow’s senior partners. We recruit the best accounting and finance professionals, then provide them with the training and advancement opportunities to keep them continually growing.
Fostering women’s leadership: BPM is dedicated to ensuring that all employees have the same opportunities for professional development and achieving success regardless of gender. Three of our talented women partners have been named among “The Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business” by the San Francisco Business Times and North Bay Business Times.
A values-driven culture: Our values include transparency, integrity and honesty. At “town hall” meetings, BPM management opens the agenda to all employees and readily fields questions – even the tough ones.
Social responsibility: BPM contributes to humanitarian causes. We are committed to emphasizing firm-wide environmental stewardship, and the majority of our Bay Area offices have Green Business certification either completed or underway.
At Burr Pilger Mayer, we are committed to the success of clients and view each engagement as uniquely important. Rather than impose cookie-cutter solutions, we listen to clients and respond to needs, thereby developing effective plans that address both current priorities and future goals.

The culture at BPM encourages innovation, team work, and community involvement. Burr Pilger Mayer has been awarded the Business Times “Best Places” to work in the Bay Area for six consecutive years and is dedicated to creating an environment that fosters a healthy work/life balance.
Not only is BPM a great place to work, we have been recognized by Accounting Today as one of the “Top 50 Accounting Firms in the US.” With an average growth of 20% each year this is no surprise. To encourage continuous growth, BPM established an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP), which gives employees stock in BPM and the incentive to contribute to its overall success.
Continued education and career development are key focal areas for BPM. BPM University was founded in 2009 to provide ongoing professional training to employees. Our Coaching Program provides mentors to help employees navigate their career and reach their full potential.
I worked at BPM full-time (More than 5 years)
Because People Matter - the motto - rings true through the day to day interactions of co-workers, management, inter department and client relationships. The amount of "care" people bring to their jobs and to their relationships with clients and each other has created an environment that allows employees the opportunity to navigate a fulfilling and fruitful career if they want to in public accounting.
The ability to change - in 6 years the company has updated their benefits, turned to jeans as the dresscode, built kitchens with snacks and drinks, thrown some amazing parties and annual meetings, launched an fully functional wellness program, brought on interesting clients, developed a corporate university, launched 3 new practice lines, opened an office in India...the list goes on. The point is, if someone has an idea, they bring it up, it's discussed & measured and if it makes sense, quickly implemented. The ability to make change successful is a huge secret that keeps the firm competitive.
Experience - BPM is made up of CPA's and professionals from all walks of life: homegrown, Big 4, Regional, specialty shops, etc. This creates a dynamic workforce and network. Some of the most intelligent people I have met work for BPM.
The HR Department - an often overlooked group in public accounting firms. BPM's HR department has goals that are in line with the overall firm goals and constantly strives to makes the lives of the employees better. They have their act together and as stated earlier can make changes that impact the wellness of the firm quickly.
Flexibility - no yoga classes yet, but you can work from home, work from one of 5 offices, working remote in most cases is ok. This depends on the nature of your job, but having that flexibility and autonomy allowed me to do my job and my life.
Public accounting vs. tech companies or industry - Yes, my friends, BPM is a public accounting firm and there are aspects of client service careers that you will never get away from. Choose if this is a con for you or not. In comparison, it is better than Big 4 and some national and regional firms when you're talking autonomy, hours, and ability to navigate your career.
Advice to Management
Keep communicating often and regularly.
Don't get rid of the Irish Coffee Party...EVER.
I applied online. I interviewed at BPM (Walnut Creek, CA).
Much like the previous reviewer, my phone interview consisted of two people that were very nice and spent a good length of time telling me about the company history, job responsibilities and client industries. That took up most of our phone call and by the time I wanted to ask questions, the 30 minute time limit didn't give me the opportunity to have asked more and contributed more; however, they seemed readily excited to bring me in for an in-person interview as my qualifications were a perfect match. I sent a thank you emails to both interviewers immediately after.
I was surprised to hear back a few days later that they decided not to move forward with me because I was overqualified. I was wondering why they even set up the interview call then? I was disappointed but even more disappointed when I got that same decline email 3 times in that same week and then today (over one month later) another one!? A little unprofessional and disorganized in my opinion.
