What We Do
BSNBCS is a ‘mom and pop’ charter school located in the heart of Bed-Stuy. Our team of dedicated educators serves more than 670 scholars who live in Central Brooklyn. Our School consists of a Lower School (serving grades K-4) and a Middle School (serving grades 5-8) which are co-located in our single building campus in Bed-Stuy. Our school culture has been designed to support our specific population of students, in this community, and our framework develops opportunities that are local to our school and borough.
Both our Lower School and Middle School teams are driven by the belief that our students can be successful at high levels regardless of their background. To empower our scholars to be successful our school team is made up of hard-working and highly talented educators who use a variety of innovative and creative instructional methods to reach each scholar where he or she is and help propel those scholars to the next level.
Our school team provides K-4 scholars with rigorous academics that put exceptional emphasis on literacy and mathematics. Our teachers provide direct and small group instruction while utilizing foundational curriculum that strictly align with common core standards and help to prepare each scholar for continued academic growth. We focus our efforts on project and experimental based learning that taps into the natural curiosity of each scholar and encourages growth and engagement.
We also focus on whole child development. Scholars perform hands-on and interactive tasks that encourage higher level and critical thinking while encouraging creativity in learning. We encourage scholars to be active participants in their learning environment and personal growth.
Our scholars are full involved in their learning through regular classroom learning, creative and performing arts, music, and a wide variety of afterschool education enrichment activities. Our scholars are also developed on a community level through frequent field trips out of the classroom which helps them to learn more about their community and experience more of what NYC has to offer. All of this if offered to help prepare these scholars for their next academic step: Middle School!
Our Middle School scholars continue to learn in an environment that is both academically challenging and encourages personal growth. Our Middle School team provides rigorous lessons that are inquiry based and project focused so that our scholars can continue to hone their critical thinking and cognitive skills.
It is important that students learn to use the tools that will be needed for continued success. Our Middle School students are offered several electives classes that include technology, dance and movement, and foreign languages. Our Middle School students are also offered a wide variety of afterschool education enrichment activities to help them to further develop.
As BSNBCS does not include a High School, part of our challenge is helping our scholars prepare for the transition to a high school of their choice upon graduation from 8th grade. Our Middle School team helps to guide our scholars and their families through the NYC high school application and selection process. Middle School counselors work closely with 7th and 8th graders to help set realistic expectations based on academic performance and proficiency, select high schools that match academic ability and desired curriculum, and complete the application process.
We prioritize daily collaboration through our scheduling and school structure, while offering a higher level of autonomy and teacher creativity than many other public schools. We also include our students in the local community. Events such as the BSNBCS Community Health Action Day, participation in the neighborhood community garden, and the planning for community playgrounds are just a few examples of how our scholars are involved with their community. Our Hiring Process
Our Interview process is designed to help us identify highly qualified professionals who possess both the technical skills to provide our scholars a quality learning environment and characteristics that match our culture. We move pretty quickly when we find highly talented educators. When we find the quality educator we are looking for, our hiring process is pretty short. Collaborative-Friendly Working Environment
We use a co-teaching model in our classrooms. Each lower school general education classroom and middle school content specialty classroom (i.e. math, science, ELA) has two teachers. This reduces our teacher: student ratio, allowing for more meaningful contact for each student. Our co-teachers are partners in all areas of lesson planning, instructional delivery, classroom management, and student development.
Our grade and school teams work collaboratively to improve the learning environment by collaborative to improve processes, provide special assistance and guidance to meet the needs of our students, strengthen our classroom teams, and to make ours a culture filled with team spirit and spirit de corps. Each staff member provides peer assistance as needed so that all team members can meet our goal of improving student learning.
Our staff members really are like family. We hold frequest off-site staff get togethers to enjoy the sense of camaraderie we share as a team. Our team members have a chance to relax and enjoy time apart from the work setting and get to know each other.
Grow in your profession
No matter what your role is on the BSNBCS team, your development is as important to us as that of the scholars in each classroom. You will have the opportunity to take advantage of professional development opportunities internally and externally as you grow as a professional. Each staff member has an Individual Professional Growth Plan (IPGP) that is designed to help him or her develop as a professional and that helps shape the progression of training and development.
A Day in the Life
As a charter school, we do not follow the same daily/ yearly calendar as the NYC DOE. Our annual calendar consists of 190 school days for students, and our staff work day is from 7:30-4:30 each day. Our schedule looks like this:
Our teachers typically start back from the summer break in mid-August; which is usually about two weeks prior to the students starting their school year. During this time, the teachers go through two weeks of intensive professional development and training workshops.
Our scholars start school at the end of August. In order to maximize the use of our school calendar in a way that is the most effective and least disruptive to the student learning environment, we do not close our school for all of the same holiday observances as the NYC DOE. We do observe all federal holidays and many religious holidays (as apply to the demographics of our student population). Of course, if there is a religious holiday you would like to observe that is not observed by the school calendar, accommodations can be discussed with your supervisor.
The staff workday begins at 7:30 am each school day. As a Title I school, we offer free breakfast to our scholars. The doors open for staff entry at 6:30 am, but scholars are not allowed entrance until 7:30 am. Scholars begin classes at 8:05 am. Teachers are provided with two prep periods each day. The scholars are dismissed by 3:30 pm each day. From 3:30 pm until 4:30 pm, staff members will either have an additional prep time, professional learning community meetings, or grade team meetings (depending on the day and team you are a part of). At 4:30pm, staff members are allowed to leave.
I have been working at Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School full-time (Less than a year)
I interviewed with Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter school and found the process to be thorough and very straight forward about the expectations for the teaching position. The morale of the school is positive and everyone I have interacted with has a similar goal, "student success." The team I am currently on is very dedicated, and we are all open to advice and tips from one another, as a new teacher to the school these are great qualities to have on a team! The administration is very "tight," and it is evident that they are in constant communication with one another. So far the school year has been amazing, and the future seems promising. As a teacher who has taught for two years, I would highly recommend employment for Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School.
There are no cons for this school. The students that Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School serve are from a low-socioeconomic environment. Researching the area to ensure it is a community you would like to serve would be beneficial.

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School (Brooklyn, NY) in April 2018.
The interview process was quite comprehensive. It involved a methodical phone interview with many questions (a few were challenging), but after having multiple interviews over the week, I was feeling confident in talking about my expertise. Within a short time, I received a message regarding setting up an in-person interview. Before heading to the interview, they emailed me requesting that I provide documents on the type of work I have been involved in, references, and data analysis. The actual in-person iterview involved a few one-to-ones, a group format, observations, and debriefs. The flow felt logical. The people were/are very down to earth, perceptive, and talented.
