Product Designer Interview

Interview
I applied online then a week later I received an online booking form to confirm my availability for an interview – which I did. I then received a phone call from HR telling me that I would be given a 'design challenge' which would be emailed to me from the hiring manager. I would be given 3 days to complete the design challenge and then if I passed I would get an interview with the hiring manager. I told HR to send the 'design challenge' through to me and I would take a look but that I was unlikely to complete it as to spend 3 days working on a design challenge at this stage as there were so many other variables involved that could influence the outcome such as salary negotiation, personality fit etc. Sending through an arbitrary design challenge to every candidate as a first step is a red flag IMO. It shows that you are not respectful of people's time, you're happy to put all candidates through a 3-day take-home challenge knowing that most will be rejected on technicalities such as not being the right fit, salary etc. Also you're only giving the candidate 3 days to complete it – which means they have to drop any plans they have that week and complete the test or burn the midnight oil. This kind of test IMO discriminates particularly against designers with families and women (who are the main carers for children and the elderly) and is biased towards young single designers. Also, this kind of test does not replicate real-world conditions where designing a product you have to collaborate with multiple stakeholder groups and developers etc, working with real data. These kind of challenges either require you to 'make stuff up' which is more of a creative exercise and the antithesis of good UX and product design (where we work with data). Or Alternatively, you are working on a challenge deeply connected to the company's business and you don't have all the information and background story - and those judging the solution do. Either way you have to make stuff up. A more appropriate solution would be a time-boxed whiteboarding session with other members of the design team.InterviewPlease drop everything in your life and design for free for 3 days and we might give you an interview.
