Among the most genuine and supportive team one could imagine, with several absolutely brilliant people on board.

Nothing atypical; standard problems with technical debt and startup growing pains.

I don’t believe any company that uses personality test assessments before a phone screen can even be scheduled is ethical when it comes to hiring practices. After applying for a social media manager position at Birchbox, I received an email from a member of the global people & culture team to complete a 30 minute assessment. This assessment asked zero questions about any social media marketing, data analysis or anything to do with the job description. Instead, this assessment was framed SAT question style asking irrelevant questions
about word and number sequences and working with shapes.

HBO recently debuted a documentary called “Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personality Tests” which discusses how testing for personality in the hiring process is a complete loophole for discrimination that mostly affects candidates of color and disability, since these personality test rubrics are based on the mostly Caucasian men that designed the test. This personality assessment is also handled by a 3rd party company called
Prevue, which is one of the predatory companies highlighted in the film. I know I went into social media marketing because I am a creative right brain and was never the best at math - this was very discouraging to see a company I have personally admired potentially weed me out for not being able to answer number sequence questions fast enough when I hold years of experience executing successful marketing campaigns.

It’s highly disappointing to see a company like Birchbox, whose mission is to connect customers normally overlooked by the beauty industry to quality beauty products, use a discriminatory practice like a personality test that has nothing to do with the job description at hand in order to unfairly weed out candidates (most likely of color and disability) who are actually a part of the target demographic they serve. I’ve written to my local representative to write a bill that prevents companies to use these kind of 3rd parry discriminatory hiring practice with no real science behind it.

Which pattern sequence is the logical match?
