Birchbox – Why Work For Us?

What Is Birchbox?

When Birchbox founders Katia and Hayley first met, they had wildly different approaches to beauty. Hayley was a self-proclaimed novice, while Katia was a connoisseur. But they agreed on one thing: Shopping for products was frustrating, inefficient, and confusing. How were customers supposed to navigate the vast range of options? And in the growing online market, how could they try products without buying them all (and going bankrupt in the process)?

That’s when Birchbox was born: the brainchild of two friends with a love of the internet and an itch to create a better way to shop for beauty products.

Katia and Hayley envisioned a way for customers—just like themselves—to easily and efficiently try, learn about, and purchase beauty products online. They combined monthly deliveries of personalized samples with original editorial and an exciting ecommerce shop. It was easy, efficient, and fun—a monthly delivery of surprise and delight.

We shipped our first Birchboxes in September 2010, and soon realized that men needed a better way to shop too. BirchboxMan launched in April 2012 to bring guys tailored shipments of grooming and lifestyle products. Millions of boxes and product matches later, our mission remains the same: to help customers find products they love. We keep that top of mind every single day.

We Want To Revolutionize Online Retail

Birchbox is changing the way people discover and shop for beauty, grooming, and lifestyle products. We combine a personalized subscription service that delivers high-end samples directly to our members with an online magazine and store. Our platform provides our brand partners with a more effective way to access customers. Birchbox launched in the Fall of 2010 and is one of the fastest growing companies in New York. We are backed by top VC firms, including Accel Partners and First Round Capital.

I worked at Birchbox full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

After working at Birchbox for over 2 years I can say there is simply no better place to learn, grow and thrive. Birchbox isn’t just a beauty company, it's truly disrupting the beauty industry. Employees are incredibly smart, kind, and resilient. Katia is a fearless leader with a unique vision and has created a strong, unstoppable team. Management is communicative, strategic, transparent and inspirational. It was a privilege to work alongside the true talent at Birchbox.

p.s. perks are endless…free Birchbox every month, generous discount on full size items in the shop, great company outings, strong work/life balance, fitness discounts (and discounts to so many NY-based companies), organized volunteer opportunities, great snacks, welcoming environment and beauty sales are like hitting the jackpot.

    Cons

Celebrate wins more! Birchbox definitely does this to some degree in team meetings and at Dashboard (the weekly company-wide meeting) but sometimes it gets lost as the team is incredibly focused on customer happiness and changing the way people discover beauty.

    Advice to Management

Continue to foster the amazing culture that you’ve built.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Birchbox.

    Interview

I was contacted by email after I applied online. I had a great phone interview, followed by an in-person interview where I met with four different employees. It took nearly two hours. I have great experience and was extremely well-prepared for the interview; I felt like I meshed well with all the people I met, and given my background and how the interview went, I was frankly expecting an offer. After the interview, I followed up with a thank you to everyone. Then, I followed up two weeks later to see if they had made a decision and heard nothing back. I circled back one more time two weeks after that to hold them accountable and get a direct answer, and I still heard nothing from my point of contact or the HR person. I think I was ghosted by Birchbox.
