Senior business leaders make sure that all employees in their groups understand why diversity is important for success and equip them with tools and knowledge to foster inclusion.
We have made inclusive leadership and management a core leadership competency. In 2015, more than 2,600 managers and leaders globally participated in Driving Better Decisions, an initiative that helps leaders and managers understand how unconscious bias works and, most importantly, provides concrete tools and guidance on how to take action to mitigate bias in key people and business decisions. As part of this program, we have redesigned key human resources processes to minimize the potential for bias and foster diversity. BlackRock’s efforts to use diversity as a driver of success were profiled in a 2015 Harvard Business School case study.
We hold our businesses accountable for progress in inclusion and diversity. During our Quarterly Business Reviews, we have focused conversations with each business about their plans and progress. We report our progress against our inclusion and diversity initiatives regularly to our Board of Directors.
As a signatory of HM Treasury’s Women in Finance Charter, which seeks to build a more balanced and diverse financial services industry, BlackRock is committed to achieving 30% female representation in senior management by 2020.

Their interests come first—always. We speak with the courage of our convictions. We say what we do and do what we say. We have a responsibility to be the voice of the investor, and we represent each client fairly and equally.
We are passionate about our work and intensely focused on performing at the highest levels. Our success requires that we out-think and out-work our competitors. We prize strong subject matter expertise and an insatiable appetite to learn.

We’re proud of our long history of innovation, and that history of introducing new and innovative approaches across our entire business has been the foundation of our success.
I worked at BlackRock full-time (More than 8 years)
good work life balance and generally respectful organization for the industry. Generally well meaning senior leadership team, although it is of course predominately white men and it shows.
tons of projects that don't go anywhere.
Difficult to assess how your work impacts the overall organization.
Difficult to advance in San Francisco with very few leadership positions outside of NY.
A lot of internal politics and gossip.
Advice to Management
try to be more positive. Leadership communication is often reactive and heavy handed "40% of you will not be working here next year". Even if that's true, it is a very heavy environment to work in when that's the guidance coming from the top. People need more aspirational messaging to feel good about their day to day. Also, stop paying lip service to diversity. If you don't mean it, don't talk about it. It's exhausting.
I applied through college or university. I interviewed at BlackRock.
The first step was an automated video interview with regular experience/resume questions. The next step was an in-person interview at their office with 2 people (one over their internal video system and one in person).
