I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Agile development environment
Polite and helpful coworkers. Low key work environment.

Nice office environment. There is a nice balance between cubicles and openness.
Blue space option to allow working from home or in any blue space office.

    Nice cafeteria with healthy food.

    Free parking garage in Detroit.
    Polite and helpful security guards.

Hires Michiganders and US citizens. Does not offshore IT work.

    Cons

IT systems developed in the 1960s. Each attempt to modernized is stopped before completion and we go in another direction.

Heavy reliance on consultant firms. Each executive has their own pet firm and the consultants firms each have their own opinions and directions so we do not have a unified plan and direction. That is frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Unified IT strategy would be grand. Let’s have a plan and then step back and let us get it done.

Accelerate getting off the mainframe. Set a target of two years and just get it done. The outsourcing to IBM did not go as planned. The year lost to zCloud migration provided no business or technology benefit to BCBSM. Time would of been better spent migrating off of the mainframe. We could be off of it by now.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in February 2020.

    Interview

I applied online and got an email two weeks later to set up an in-person interview. The online application included an assessment test. The in-person interview was conducted by two employees and was shorter than I was expecting. The interviewers were really nice and were willing to answer all my questions.
